thursday 1
But I can see why. Alleviate the boredom. Drinking is a good way to go too.

big-will 7
Just finished It and onto The Stand. Read them both ages ago but decided to revisit.
klingon 10
Watched the 3 hours movie/miniseries for It recently. Pretty decent until perhaps the end. Never seen the The Stand adaptation. Any good?
kintaro 0
Stephen King has an incredible imagination but I find his writing style to be poor. Same goes for Thomas Harris (Silence of the Lambs). But that's just me.
grungy-gonads 54
I find Thomas Harris far worse. Both a bit successful hey.
Jynxx 4
Personal preference. I think Thomas Harris is brilliant. Stephan King goes on a little bit but in a creative way. Can't stand Tom Clancy types and those ex-SAS writers. As bad as those shite newspapers. Books are great when backpacking. You read it and leave it at the b'packers. You pick one up from those that left it. Good system I reckon.
kintaro 0
John Irvine has a very eloquent writing style. His books are great but of the many that became movies, the only one I've liked is The World According to Garp. The Cider House Rules is a distant second. That's another thing, books tht become movies are almost never as good as the book. Anyone ever tried to read the Bible or the Koran? I tried but it's a truly boring read (no intentions to offend religious people).
Jynxx 4
Agree on that about the movies vs books. Only exception - Harrison Ford ones of the Clancy books. It's like thanks for saving my time on this crap Harry. Actually thought about reading the Koran and the Tora. The old testament is a good read that does make me wonder what the Jewish version is ... I really would like to read the gospel by Mary if there is one.
thursday 1
The Cider House Rules. Saw the movie, with Michael Caine.
kintaro 0
One book that I read and then really thought the movie portrayed it properly was The Firm - John Grisham.
Tubby Beaver 209
I like the SAS books, well interesting reads. In fact reading the early Andy McNab and Chris Ryan books about Bravo Two Zero sparked my interest in reading again after ditching books as a young teenager. I like the spy stories as well, I really enjoyed reading the Bourne Identity and was HUGELY disappointed when the movie came out. Its very little like the book. One of my all time favourite books is Four Fires by Bryce Courtney, a book about an Irish immigrant family in Victoria Australia around the end of the 19th century and throught the start of the 20th
big-will 7
Interesting you say that I thought The Firm movie was really disappointing after reading the book. Wouldn't mind seeing that again actually.
brit-gob 9
Started this one When a Billion Chinese Jump: How China Will Save Mankind – Or Destroy It by Jonathan Watts Interesting start, interesting topic.
Tubby Beaver 209
Been reading books at a fair rate of knots since coming off on holiday, nothing high brow, just a few pulp spy novels. Just finished reading The Naming of the Dead and Exit Music by Ian Rankin. These are the last 2 books concerning his long standing character John Rebus.
Thundercat 60
Just finished reading 'God is not Great: How religion poisons everything' by Christopher Hitchens. You can probably guess what its about. Very interesting.
Tubby Beaver 209
yeah thats a good book. It was like someone took a copy of my thoughts from age 13 and wrote this book!

yamayamayama 2
The Greatest Show on Earth, read that myself a few months back and really enjoyed it. On a recent flight, The Lost Symbol. My excuse is, it was a flight.
Tubby Beaver 209
s that the new Dan Brown book? any good? Wasn't a huge fan of Da Vinci Code.....was a pretty 2nd rate book BUT I did like the Q's it threw up about Jesus and the church
veronica 2
Yes it is. As you might expect it to be nothing to get excited about TB.
2pints-mate 0
Didn't really like any of his at all. I do quite enjoy John Grisham ones for an easy entertaining story every now and again. Actually haven't seen a new one of his for a while.
Nisoko 6
The Weight of Silence Heather Gudenkauf Good thriller
Jynxx 4
The Historian Elizabeth Kostova Really enjoyed it. One of those books that's full of surprise since I just picked it up and read the first page and kept going for two days. Sometimes it's good to read without reading what it's about on the back cover.
RobBright 35
That's the book about Dracula right? It was good, but the plot was a bit too slow and long in places.
