its-a-clock 0
Tatami.....Do you like it? I like it when its new, but not too keen on the smell when its overpowering, and hate it when its old and dirty. Yuck
Karnidge 2
Like it, like you said if it's my own and fairly new. I've been to some enkais in a dump of a place with the most disgusting tatami ever. Gross.
Ocean11 0
Tatami in the summer is OK for dossing about on, as long as its in good condition (unlike in our house where we're gradually having to cover it with carpet). In winter it's useless - cold as hell and yet you're not supposed to walk on it with slippers (we do though). I find it amusing and pathetic that tatami shops put out ads saying 'Tatami is Japanese culture'. I go about with bits of Japanese culture stuck to my clothing where the tatami has disintegrated. Fattwins 0
I like it. but it doesnt have a long life, I can smell good or bad. It can be cool or too cold. I cant say why I just like it.
rachael 0
I used to have a tatami mat room - the bedroom - and didn't take the futon up for about 1 year. When I did eventually take it up..... YUCK*
zwelgen 0
The best thing about tatami is you can spill all manner of nastiness on it and its pretty easy to clean up. Much easier than carpet thats for sure. Also its soft so good for sleeping on and its cool in summer and it doesnt get itchy like carpet. I dont like it or dislike it but If im putting my futon on top of it then Id prefer tatami, if its a bed I dont care.
2pints-mate 0
What does it smell like then?
Ocean11 0
Reedy. It's made of rice stalks or other reeds, so it has a dryish reedy smell. When it's rotten it has a nauseating stink.

ayumi_nagumo 0
I love tatami!
klingon 10
Older tatami is awful. I can only imagine what it looked like under the futon after a year
enderzero 0
I think it smells like hay. If I was to just throw my sweatshirt on the tatami when I got home, when I went to put it on the next day it would smell like I had left it out in the barn overnight. Other than the smell I like it, but I prefer nice carpet.
wendy-cake 0
I really like tatami. I remember first entering my apartment and getting that first smell. "Really like" wasn't what came to mind then.
enderzero 0
I love tatami compared to what is under it. My crappy room right now just has the ugly splattered 2x4s. Totally gross and unwelcoming. They promised to re-do the floors too! Anyway, I am outta here this weekend by any means.

cal 6
How much does a tatami cost?
OnTheTin 0
Good point, don't know. I can imagine they'd be real expensive though. Can't beat a deep pile carpet though, can you?
IIIII 2
My J friend here tells me a tatami will put you back between 45000 and 60000 yen.
nagpants 1
Thats a lot of cash for a big room.
brit-gob 9
Blimey, I didn't think they'd cost that much.
oblivion 5
They certainly do, then theres the cost of "fitting". It all adds up, like you might imagine. I had a few replaced and was livid when I got the bill.
