If you read the posts you would know that it wasn't about "non smoking" as such, but the fact that most places are not smoking dens that you need gas masks to survive in.

You know, coming from your ludicrous "most Japanese smoke while dining" comments.

People walking around will quite easily find places.

Well that is a very passive contention, please (seriously) point out how what I was saying was unreasonable or in anyway carried the type of tone you use. I was making observations and was hoping for a reasonable conversation on the whole foreigner/non foreigner things. Sure I took implications (I thought that was valid, and it appears to me others took implications along a similar line) then I tried ad nauseum to explain that I did not judge anyone about that nor was it bad or good, right or wrong, there was just a difference that I wished to explore and understand - domestic v international tourism.

If you could show me where I have acted unreasonably or been unreasonable, I would appreciate it, Please! Because it was never my intention... you just seem to attack people rather than discuss issues. wakaranai

Sure some places have reasonably good ventillation.
My list above can still be added to if you wish.

Wasn't that after you consistently kept on banging on about and insisting that people were implying stuff that they weren't implying?

Yes, I think it was.

Aww, I hope that you weren't emotionally scarred by that!

What is this, an elementary school playground or something?

How old are you, 7?

Well I found 16 places in Kutchan that are smoke free out of 128 places listed in the Kutchan Restaurant Guide. There are a few others as well that have non smoking areas. More than I thought actually although some of them I've never even heard of!

On this rare occasion I agree with GN although most Japanese could be an exaggeration.

Our main casino which attracts Japanese/Asian High Rollers is non smoking as are the rooms these rules a bent to allow them to smoke or else they would not visit (In decent numbers).

And after visiting Niseko we found most/alot of establishments that attracted mainly Japanese/Asian clientelle were smoking and people were smoking in between and during there meals (something that used to happen maybe 15 years ago in Perth.

So my opinion would be based on experience that alot of Japanese smoke. Although I have only visited 2 places.

Why wouldn't they smokes are only $5/pack where as in Australia they are $15+.

I just get annoyed with all the ignorant tourists who can not even be bother to prelearn even a few simple pleasantries in Japanese. And also those that fail to engage their brain,

example:

On the bus on the way into Kutchen from Hirafu at a bus stop, foriegn tourist asks the driver (who clearer has limited English speaking ability)"Do I get off here?" , when the bus driver fails to answer in English, he repeats the question over and over for a couple of minutes before he decides to take a seat again.

How the hell is driver suppose to know the answer to this question????

Tourists such as this need culling, which upon observation would mean quite a reduction in repeat tourist numbers.

I regulary go to about 5 restaurants in my town.

None of them are no smoking, but none of them ever seem to have much smoking going on.

Most Japanese certainly don't smoke there - and the clientele is close to 100% Japanese. Not many gaijin in Mimamiuonuma.

I know some places that will be much more likely to be 'smoky', but I just don't go to them.

It's not difficult.

Yeh sand, is it more embarrassing doing that or being caught out speaking the language poorly but at least trying? Tourists may not be endangered but I believe they are a protected species wakaranai wink

Considering that there are english announcements on the bus now at each stop that's just silly! Having been involved in tourism up here now for over 6 years I have learned though to never underestimate how stupid a lot of tourists can be. You wouldn't believe how many times I get asked which airport is closest to the resort. Some haven't even heard of Hokkaido! Amazing how many people will have no problem paying out thousands of dollars on a destination that they have done absolutely no research on whatsoever!

I had been an interpreter and understand the gripes of the tourist element of the job, whether in Japan or Australia, Japanese or Westerners.

Personally I find now GN´s post informative, and he sticks to what he knows best with his own experience in Niseko and does not make any grand claims (like he is a japan specialist or something)

I find that not only acceptable but pleasant and have some renewed respect of his character.

As to those who is part of the scene, I don´t think anyone is interested how one is treated a VIP TOKEN GAIJIN in your little village. Doesn´t mean shit you lived there for 4 years.

I´ve lived in a town south of Munich for 4 years and most likely my German is better than your Japanese, and I know that I don´t know shit about Germany, or Bavarians for that matter.

Not everyone is interested in the local ski/board scene because that is all. Local. Even you are Japanese and go to some ski-jyo, you are an outsider. "Do you come from Tokyo?" is not only a question but a statement that puts you in a place.

Reminder- I am Japanese and no japanese thinks different unless I tell them otherwise. They will think I am from Tokyo.

I just want to ski/board. "Save me from your petty politics but if there are local rules, tell me." is all I can say in my situation.

You lot are Gaijins. You are treated differently. Some of you don´t deserve that privilege and I think some Japanese are waking up to that fact.

This thread is all about this scene BS, isn´t it. Scene expectation and disappointments from the OP (tbh a bit rough treatment on the forum for a new ´un)

But if the topic ventures away from the snow .. likely you will get responses that are of personal nature. Wakey wakey...

Jynxx, I've edited your post.

----

Sorry, but it's all getting a bit too personal and direct insults here now I think.

If you really can't resist posting without going on a personal attack and insulting others, please don't post.

Thanks.

Is 'posting it that way' in any way helping to improve matters?

In fact, actually yours is the only one I have edited.

Disagreeing and even arguing is fine.

But the personal ott stuff isn't.

Please let us decide if things go over a line.

Thanks.

Interesting observation:

Funny isn't it how in some cases some people want things to be completely open and free, but in other cases the very same people very much want the 'censorship' that they claim they so dislike (when it suits them).

I don´t know if it helps matters improve,

but don´t you think it is unfair that some are venting off steam on expense of others?

That is my argument.

My point is that you don´t like someone, fine, take it somewhere else.

As I am finding that disagreeable.

so tell me I have done something the others haven´t?

I don´t think so.

I did not singling out anyone, but addressing this bickering that´s going on.

Do you find my language offensive - perhaps -then tell me that.

In no way I have argued about your censorship.

Thanks

Look, I really do not want to get into this, but I will respond to your points clearly:

As I said in my post above, discussions and even arguments are ok.

Some people think that A is the one venting off steam at the expense of B.

Other people think that B is the one venting off steam at the expense of A.

What are we to do, not allow people to strongly disagree with each other? (No need to answer that).

But I thought it was clearly time to make my post when you took it to a new level.

Yes, the language you used was more offensive than other people.

I did not say or imply that you have.
