thursday 1
and asking the guy for the best price.
Crudzilla 0
If you want to visit a shop then Jimbotcho in the Tokyo is where I got all my stuff a few seasons ago, good selection but still a bit thin for people my height. As somone said before take a notebook and go to all the stores getting thier best prices, its one of the few places in Japan where you can haggle. HOWEVER With the exception of boots I'd say buy it on the internet! Especially if you know exactly what models and sizes you want. The shipping here is really cheap, usually arrives the next day, and you can pay the postman so you don't need to worry about credit cards etc! Most places use kuroneko delivery which costs 300-1000 yen even for big stuff and you just pay the guy when he shows up. You could probably even get it delivered to hotels... I got myself a last season Burton Custom 166 (a size that I would never find here in Nagano, in fact I'm struggling to find a bag for it now >.<) for 20,000 about a month ago. This week I got my bindings (This seasons Flow NXT AT for 40% off!!! couldn't believe it) Also recomend an american site called Moosejaw.com. got my jacket and trousers there this year, you need a credit card but the dollar is so cheap atm that even with the $70 shipping to Japan (UPS) they still came in at about 2/3 the price that they would have cost me here and in sizes that aren't even available in Japan! Off to get boots tomorrow, I'd say buy boots at a shop as you really want to find a good fit! For the rest of it go online! Oh and a tip for buying online in Japan... just go to japanese google and click the only search japan button then type in the model you are looking for and the top results are often what your looking for at the cheapest prices. Alot of the websites look really crummy and are the kind of places that I would never give my credit card / trust my order in the UK... BUT with the pay the post man option no credit card and if it never shows up you never pay
Fattwins 0
As I said a store here in town is only stocking big stuff for Gaijins. It is what they are marketing. They have arranged to get their boards from America with Japanese warranties on the boards. If you want a bag you can get it in Hakuba.
AK 77 0
Is that the new shop near the station opposite Gravity Works? That would be a big bonus for Hakuba if they are stocking bigger stuff, boards and clothing.
Fattwins 0
Cant beat the price of Tokyo but it has the sizes. Rappie is selling sick skins too for 50% off. The coil skins I bought 2 pairs for myself plus marker dukes
skidaisuki 0
Rappie's a good shop. He deserves support - not just for the friendly advice but especially for all the serious mountain gear he stocks. If you want skis and you prefer to see what you're buying first, I'd still recommend the specialist shops like Wangel in Jimbocho (Tokyo). There's simply more choice. Yeh he specializes in L and XL sizes , is a volouteeer on the avalanche rescue comittee and puts in to the local community - largest range of boards in Japan over 160cm. Rappie has the range in ski equip and outdoor you don't need to see everything to know what works up here.

I also know the guy he speaks of, and yes, he certainly does know his stuff!! In fact, he is one of the most obliging and helpful people you could ever meet! Looking forward to seeing you in about 8 days TJ.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted January 5, 2008 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted January 5, 2008 We don't like "subliminal adverts", but if anyone goes overboard with that kind of thing we will take care of it. Please mail us to notify us of things like this rather than posting in public. Thank you.
Kraut_in_HongKong 0
How about Kakaku? Kakaku has a section for sport stuff. Go to Kakaku and click on the golf icon. From there you get to snow board and ski. Seems that the ski are made for Japan only. When I google any of those ski names, such as Atomic Izor Fuzz I get only returns from Japan (including a good range of shops). PS: K2 Apache Outlaw + Marker M1 Piston is on Kakaku for 67,

I know the guy TJ is talking about too. He does not post on here. He does not have any affiliation to any of the shops mentioned. He just likes to shop and help others out. Fattwins knows him and has already posted his name in this thread

Then I walked out with a ski bag and skis for my wife also. Just go to the shop and ask for his best price while fiddling with your credit card.
Kraut_in_HongKong 0
Do people bargain prices in Japan? I thought it's uncommon in Japan. That K2 Apache Outlaw sells on eBay USA for about $700, seems the JP price is even better then the US price. Interesting.... PS: does HK has ski shops?
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted January 6, 2008 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted January 6, 2008 As I said yesterday, please take your arguments off these Forums. However, it seems my request was ignored as I have just had to delete 2 more argumentative posts. The argument here ends now. If one more post appears along those lines, we will take away the posting rights of that member. We don't want to do that - please don't make us.

There is always room for bargain in Japan, provided you have conversational level Japanese.
baff 0
I heard there was a few shops in Tokyo selling last seasons gear and seriously discounted rates. Any ideas about where these shops are located?

Jyves 0
If you know exactly what you want (model, size, color) check out the auctions. The big one in Japan is Yahoo but rakuten also works well. Often they come from the stores directly, and are thus new. But sometimes the equipment was imported from the States and the warranty is null (esp. for Burton stuff, it seems). I got some Burton Ruler boots with a 32% discount. It was delivered in 2 days.
wattiewatson 0
i have found new prices pretty high in Nagano city. I havent looked at buying in Hakuba. However if you are a longer term resident, there are some excellent second hand stores around the place. there is a 163 Option sitting in one for around US$100. My mate got a 158 Uninc for US$30 and i got a 162 carbon yonex for $US100. There are some good deals to be had but it takes sometime trolling through the junk. Matt
