FT, thanks again for everything. toque, your advice was invaluable. we used the hot-water-in-the-naglene-bottle trick to warm up our boots in the mornings. kuma, we ended up entering through Nagano and going home that way, too. so next time, let's have sushi. i had wanted to leave for tateyama on sunday and meet EBC and AK77, who is now Luke Skywalker, but the rain kept me in town for the next three days. LS and i went up tateyama on Day 2. he wanted a line under the second saddle from the right and i wanted the one left of the fourth saddle. he went and checked it out, but we ended up taking the under the hut all the way on the right. i learned a good lesson and that's not to fall in a fall zone. all i had to do was wait until the ice turned to softer snow. stupid mistake. i ended up sliding about 50 meters until i could self arrest in the softer snow. my left ankle bruised a bit, but after a day it was ok. view from the top towards camp AK coming down: we kept calling him Luke and referencing Star Wars all week: him and EBC on Day 3 while i stayed off my ankle. those dots are them on the face, low resolution shot from camp. they'll tell you more about the line in the background under the cornice. and Day 4 we left early before the clouds and rain and went for a park session at a resort! i have a greater appreciation of chairlifts now. it was a huge learning experience and great fun. if you close your eyes in camp in the late afternoon, it almost feels like you're at the beach--the voices, the sun, etc. i want a better stove. the gas that my Snowpeak stove takes just creates more garbage/recycables. i have a better respect for the environment as well, surprised to see the amount of trash left behind by campers--piles of cigarette butts/non-biodegradables. and i've got to hand it to EBC--She can handle her own out there. i'm going to pack lighter (somehow) for the next camping trip! I figured you guys had come from Nagano so I didn't expect you to come down Tateyama side just for sushi! Tetsuo is pretty crazy but he cant jump so i found it funny that he went to the park. he is like toque and just never ever does park. i wanted that line this year but im not sure that it will hold snow much longer so ill do it next year. its not as steep as it looks really. AK 77 0 Posted May 8, 2006 Share Posted May 8, 2006 It was a really fun trip! Strange being up that high camping with so many other people around, and an onsen! Nice atmosphere around camp - some families with hardy children, lots of alpine club types, and the odd couple doing the romantic backcountry riding thing, or trying to when not being disturbed by urasai gaijin (me) "let's socialising". My favourite things, as i remember them now: * walking round after arriving, laughing at the excesive digging of walls around tents and elaborate snow architecture of other campers - then proceeding to do exactly the same ourselves. * The weather. especially evening light. * Hiking - getting that summit feeling, it kind of creeps up on you when your main goal is sliding down, you forget that you still get the same topping out feeling as when mountain climbing. and beating most of the 'alpinists' to the top of tateyama despite setting off much later, by taking the direct ascent route. * The company - lets having fun! although EBC might not agree with the farting aspect of this! * Dizzy pretending not to understand Japanese in a vain attempt to get into the onsen after it closed at 7pm (" 7? huh? No, 3 pe -o -ple, 3...). * Meeting total freeride skier guy - and proceeding to convince him to ride park in 47 with us the same day we came down from tateyama. * laughing alot, and being given sake by the mountaineers nextdoor - in an indirect way of telling us to be quiet. nice guys though. * making lists of things to remember for next time! haha Link to post Share on other sites
