Amos in Utsunomia 0
So, we've had a Hakuba poll what about Yuzawa. I am thinking of going over there with a few friends who are in Nagano (meet in the middle).... so, get voting!
muikabochi 208
Depends on what you want. I like Naeba but only when it's not busy. Same with Gala, if it is not busy the runs are quite interesting. What kind of thing are you looking for?
@tokyo 14
Kagura
muikabochi 208
Yuzawa Park and Nakazato are fairly small places but I've had a few decent days there. Check the reviews section for more. I don't think Gala is that small, esp when you link it up with Ishiuchi - big area that is.
SKI 15
If I want excellent snow I usually head off to Kagura/Tashiro. If I want steeps, Kandatsu. I quite like Maiko as well just to the north of Yuzawa. Moguls has to be Hakkai-san a bit further north still in Muikmamachi (even so just 40 mins or so from Yuzawa)
Middleman C Charbroiled 2 0
I often think Gala gets a bad rap. The left hand side is really good (esp weekdays when empty). Steep, difficult runs quite a lot of moguls on there.
SKI 15
Here is that part of Gala. Not the best of pics sorry, but you get an idea
Fattwins 0
its too bad that they didnt open the bottom as planned
mattlucas 0
It looks like it drops right off below the lifts Looking head on at slopes is often deceiving but that almost looks flat
oo 1
That area is all pretty steep. And the bottom ropeway station you see there is the bottom of the resort area. That pic looks like it was taken from Yuzawa kogen.
Fattwins 0
I have a better map at home. If anyone has a link to a good pic please link it. the intial plans for yuzawa had the bottom part beening opened as well. Lack of money at the end of the bubble killed that. rigor mortis 0
at gala yuzawa, if you go up the top, then drop down the back, is it still gala? Anyway, i went there on one fresh powder day and it was filthy! pretty steep and rugged, but heaps of snow and lots of options. a tad short, but you can blast it to the bottom in 1 clean hit and up again. 69 5
Kagura is best
echineko 1
I like Naeba and Kagura areas.
osoroshiijinbutsu 0
Kagura wins that one, but I also like Kandatsu, Naeba and Gala/Ishiuchi from time to time.
brit-gob 9
I'm quite keen on Maiko round the back of Iwappara.
rach 1
I might be taking a trip up that way this season.... it just doesn't seem to have the same vibe going on as Hakuba. Would like to spend a few days there though as well as Nozawa and Myoko area as well.
sushi-scoffer 0
I like that part of Gala (in the photo above). Problem is when you get tons of people on there that really shouldn't be. They are steep slopes, but lots of people go even though they spend most of their time on their backs or just simply stuck.
muikabochi 208
That is the biggest problem with that area. When it's empty though (weekdays), it is great if you're into that kind of thing.
osoroshiijinbutsu 0
That left hand part of Gala is also often closed when bad weather, and they need a lot of snow for it to open so sometimes early season it isn't.
muikabochi 208
Yes it usually takes a bit to get going that part
big-will 7
That area sure gets clogged up as well - best to go on the emptiest day you can thing of.
woywoy 0
I like Kagura myself too but always have troubles working out what to do on super windy days when the top quad is closed. What does everyone else do when Kagura is only "half-open", or should that be "half-closed"?
montoya 0
if you are stuck at big restaurant at the base of the #1 quad, you can always hiking up the slope. however that slope is directly exposed to the wind so it's more than likely gonna be pretty scoured. also not much fun with 20-30km/h winds in your face. I usually hit a different resort on super-windy days, such as Kandatsu, etc.
