Tubby Beaver 209
yeah....I don't think its a day return trip from Tokyo, I think you have to stay over but you travel up there overnight
panhead_pete 27
Looks like a shink on JR east and a bus?? Maybe 4 hrs travel time during the day from Tokyo ???
norcal 5
Zao deserves at least 2 days. You need the nights too for the crazy wild nightlife going on! is there really a nightlife there?
muikabochi 208
Absolutely none whatsoever!
Slippery Jim 65
Plenty, but it's BYOB (Bring Your Own Babe)
HeatherLocklearRocks 1
I bet there's some damn fine karaoke going on in some of the hotels. And there's always the conbini!
ILoveZao 8
Ah yes nightlife. The village doesn't need to be the liveliest on the planet, but it certainly needs to be more lively than it is now in an evening! Well we did open for a few days but the snow didn't last long and we have now been closed for a few. Not a whole lot of snow on the horizon either really.
Azuki 0
I think most people go to Zao and spend time in their hotel. It is difficult situation to break out of.
snowbender 3
You mean that people won't supply other entertainment if everyone is cooked up in their all-inclusive hotels?
muikabochi 208
That was exactly what a few people in Zao told me when I was there.
ILoveZao 8
Yes. The Zao Now reports are covering it well, but we are now just waiting for snow.
ILoveZao 8
Some more of the mountain open now and though it's still thin on the ground in most places, good to see things opening up. We could really do with a proper dump to get things going though. As many other places of course.
tokabochi 9
Good to see a bit of Zao opening up. Hoping to get there late January. Let it snow!
ILoveZao 8
A few quick snaps from when the clouds cleared
soubriquet 0
Solid snow now. Everything will be open. To get to Zao by train from Tokyo. Take the Yamagata Shinkansen (Tsubasa) to Kaminoyama Onsen, then take a taxi or bus. It's less than 3 hours from Tokyo, and about 20 minutes to get up the mountain. I'll put up a route map for cars from Narita to Zao tomorrow.
@tokyo 14
I'll do it now. http://www.snowjapan...velMode=DRIVING And get there from anywhere using this: http://www.snowjapan.com/e/route-finder/ski-resort-route-finder.php?resortNo=

ILoveZao 8
Solid snow now. Everything will be open. No, not everything is open yet. Most, and getting there, but not all. Uwanodai has a fair few lifts not moving and there's a few others. The snow is not deep yet and lots popping up so not enough yet.
soubriquet 0
@tokoyo's first link is correct. That is the Narita->Zao route. It's missing the Expressway names. Any suggetions?
soubriquet 0
From Narita, find the Ken-O Expressway. Turn north on the Jo Ban expressway Turn west on the Ban Etsu Expressway Turn north on the Tohoku Expressway Turn west on the Yamagata expressway @moderator. Love your snip (technical not Anglo-Saxon).
