needpowderjm 0
I really like the look of this place but there doesn't seem to be much nearby it out on it's own. That correct?
muikabochi 208
I suppose it is. There aren't any other big ski resorts close-by. Having said that, it's good for a number of days.
ILoveZao 8
Maybe I should create different thread for off-season? Anyway farmers are busy now!

That correct? Correct. There are not many other skijo close-by and Zao is biggest in Yamagata-ken. But Zao is worth staying for at least a number of days rather than just day trip. pie-eater 207
Ms pie told me that there was a program on NHK (so probs celeb-free) that had about 20 minutes on the Zao monsters. It is repeated Tuesday morning at 1am (about?), so anyone in Japan interested.....

muikabochi 208
Very interesting! They showed how the ice monsters "ebi no shippo" can grown 8cm in one night, against the wind, when it isn't snowing!
googie 0
I really want to go there but problem is about no other places closeby, for that reason we are choosing a base where there is a choice of places closeby

Mintyjulep 0
Zao is really really beautiful! We were considering Zao for our honeymoon, but it seemed a bit pricier than other places we looked at as you don't have much choice beside your hotel for dinner. We'll definitely go one day when we have real moneys though I love the pictures of the snow monsters lit up!
muikabochi 208
If you don't have dinner in your hotel in Zao, you choice is the convenience store or eating snow!
muikabochi 208
Don't get me wrong, love the place and I would recommend it.

mina2 6
I know it sells pot noodles. With all the hotels doing 2 meal deals, can't see that situation changing too quickly.

fat lump 0
Love your thread ILoveZao. It brings back a lot of memories of when I was in Yamagata - spent 2 years in the area. I am itching to get back, though not sure when that might be.
ceecee 0
Hi A group of us are thinking of going Zao in February 2011 for 5 nights. I get the impression that having dinner at your hotel is a must - is there really no other option other than dinner at your hotel? Even if there is one of two places to eat which we can walk to is fine... I've found a few places to stay at which have pretty good rates but without meals. But if there really is nowhere to eat other than your hotel them I may have to consider a few other places that offer a good rate for dinner and breakfast. Thanks!
