  1. I wonder if there might have been a plan for a gondola to connect them at one time? (Maybe not!) It's just the same company owning them, hence lift ticket stuff and events.

    French language spoken in Japan

Well, here in this area - don't expect to be hearing much French at all!

Day from Niseko - Kiroro or Rusutsu?

I did both when I went and would definitely recommend doing that especially if you are there for over a week. Also preferred Kiroro.

    Ski rentals, Fukushima, Akita, Iwate.

That's a heck of a wide question! Perhaps if you are more specific?
  5. This is what I heard from a friend who is a manager at a ski-jo in the Yuzawa area. Ishiuchi Maruyama is now owned by a 子会社 of Nippon Cable. Over at Nozawa Onsen, a new Gondola is going to be made to replace the Nagasaka Gondola. One without a mid station. That is due for the 2020-2021 season and it will be made by Nippon Cable. The curiously short one at Ishiuchi was build as a kind of test / learning process with the new technology for what will be the much larger Nozawa one. Totally don't know how much of that is true, but it's interesting all the same.

    Is Kusatsu (Gunma) still open?

I did too. A shame. There's not much left of interest for me now there. Like the onsen though!
  7. Hi! I think the 3 places to look at are Norn Minakami and the two Minakami Kogen areas close to Hodaigi Definitely Norn as they seem to make a big point about their snow land area and it seems popular https://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resorts/gunma/minakami/norn-minakami and maybe these two as they are smaller more family places, not exactly sure what they snow playing areas are like https://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resorts/gunma/minakami/minakami-kogen-fujiwara https://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resorts/gunma/minakami/minakami-kogen-ski-resort

    Why does Minakami include Naeba?

This might be totally wrong but I remember someone telling me locally that Naeba has some kind of tie-up with Minakami tourist assn. or something. Promotional kind of stuff, as it obviously is not in Minakami.
  9. The blast happened! I'm writing this from Kagura - lots of fresh snow. Got to get to it now.

    Best conditions in Japan?

You mean best conditions right now? It's going to be "spring" pretty much everywhere now. Head high. Perhaps Kagura in Yuzawa. https://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resorts/niigata/yuzawa/kagura And fingers crossed there might be some fresh snow this week..

What's the best time to visit Japan to ski?

Yep, if you want the highest chance of the best/most snow, it's going to be around the second half of January.
  12. You won't be needing snow tires. Unfortunately.

    Minakami options

Minakami is great isn't it. Hodaigi and Okutone sound like decent choices. There's always Tenjin which is a tiny ski-jo with the backcountry options - but it's worth going up there on a fine day for the scenery. Stunning setting. Looks like we're going to have quite a few good weather days too. Hopefully winter will come back. None of the places in the area are huge so if you are around for a number of days I'd try different places out.

    Natural mogul courses?

Yes the top of Iwappara is a bit like a mini Hakkai-san, and closer! Love Hakkai-san when it's in top condition.

    Marunuma Kogen mid season

I like Marunuma Kogen. I like the fact that it is a bit out of the way (for lots of people). Though at the same time I wish it were closer. The snow is usually really good up there. As you noted it's popular early/late season and has a long season. Early and late other skijo in Gunma and elsewhere are generally not open at those times. With much more choice in mid-season, as well as the transport issue, it seems to be less busy in the middle of the season. Or it has been so when I have been. Good place though. I'd recommend a visit.
