The Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo was understood to have been smuggled out of the country by police today after receiving a number of death threats. Ovrebo has become the target of a hate campaign after failing to award Chelsea a series of penalty appeals during their Champions League semi-final defeat against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge last night. After the game, Ovrebo was barracked by the Chelsea players, including Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack, and he was escorted to the tunnel by Chelsea stewards.

Police were said to be so concerned about his safety that they changed his hotel before organising his secret exit from Britain. Police in Ovrebo's home city of Oslo said they were investigating threats made on the internet. An Oslo police spokesman said: "We are watching closely what is being posted on the internet. Anything we believe would threaten his personal safety will be taken seriously."

Former international referee Graham Poll said today: "This morning he's being smuggled out of our country under police escort – this is a referee of a football match. That is a disgrace. When he booked into a hotel they had to change the hotel he was staying at because of the fear that maybe fans would find him."

Funny thing Chelsea blabbering on about "we'd have won if the ref hadn't made all those mistakes". What about looking back home - you would have won if you had scored the goals you should have scored. ie. not make your own mistakes. haha. slap

They are deeply embarrassed by his temper tantrum, carried out in flip-flops after he ran back on to the pitch at the final whistle having been substituted with 18 minutes remaining.

This is interesting

UEFA site said: It will be one-all

CHELSEA fans blasted UEFA after discovering the final score of 1-1 was posted on its website HOURS before kick-off.

Blues supporters were stunned that the governing body of European football correctly predicted the outcome of the explosive Champions League semi-final with Barcelona.

A dummy match report on UEFA’s website even stated the Spanish giants would get a late equaliser.

It also rightly predicted three of the four Chelsea players who got booked — Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack and Alex.

One Chelsea fan who rang The Sun said: “This ‘test’ is remarkably similar to the actual result.â€

UEFA was unavailable for comment last night.

Quote:
Uefa General Secretary David Taylor has slammed the conspiracy theorists who believe Chelsea's controversial exit from the Champions League reflected the governing body's desire to avoid another all-English final.

Several Chelsea players believe that might explain the erratic refereeing of their semi-final second leg against Barcelona by Tom Henning Ovrebo.

Taylor, who was at the match at Stamford Bridge, said he was angered by the implication that Uefa would try to influence the outcome of a match.

"If anything it's a media conspiracy against Uefa,'' he said. "It does make me angry. It really annoys me because it's a load of rubbish.''

Darren Fletcher will find out on Monday whether he will be able to play in the Champions League final after Uefa agreed to consider a letter of appeal from Manchester United against the Scotland midfielder's dismissal in the semi-final, second leg against Arsenal on Tuesday. But Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, does not expect the appeal to succeed.

Fletcher was shown a red card for a challenge on Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas, but United have written to the governing body to claim that the sending-off - which rules him out of the final against Barcelona in Rome on May 27 - was incorrect on the grounds that Fletcher made contact with the ball before he touched Fabregas.

Despite the fact that there is, theoretically, no appeal against a red card except in a case of mistaken identity, Uefa will consider United's submission next week. "The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body will meet on Monday to deal with this case," a Uefa statement said.

However, Ferguson does not expect Fletcher to have his red card rescinded. "I am not optimistic at all," he said. "We have to do it for Darren and sometimes in these situations, you never know. But I don't think it will be overturned. The referee made an honest decision."

I doubt it, but he should!! what a shame that he's gonna miss the biggest game of his career, he's been playing regularly in the CL this season too. Oh well, he'll just have to help Scotland to win the world cup in 2010!! rollabout doh

Liverpool next play a week today.

Before that, United have 3 (three!!) PL games - City today, Wigan on Wednesday and then Arsenal on Saturday. Very busy week, got to worry about tiredness but hopefully adrenalin will be pumping.

2 wins and a draw from those 3 games and we have won the title before Liverpool kick a ball again.

That would be brilliant.
