Can you tell much difference between an 8mb connection and a 40mb? I'm sure you can when downloading big files etc, but for normal browsing does it make much of a difference?

That sounds like good service. I often find it varies. I just ordered something from amazon.co.jp yesterday at 3pm. I got the confirmation "sent" mail before 5pm last night and it was with me at 10am this morning.

There are some places a km or so away from the bottom of the place if I remember correctly. Small old looking type places, thats all I know. sorry.

I'd start here http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_desktop4?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs and grade up in the customised area - as high a spec as you can afford. Playing around with it will give a good idea of what's going on. Try www.zdnet.com and places like that for reviews as well.
