A vigilant eye and a good uppercut are your best protection.
dale#1 1
Never locked mine, though I like to put it somewhere so I can see it if I go inside for more than a few minutes. What do you locking folks use to lock up with?
skidaisuki 0
Tohoku - all I can do is recount my experience, and I have been skiing in this country since 1995... Perhaps there are more crims in Aizu, who knows

Thats the same advice I was told just before my board got stolen, i learnt the hard way. Unless your a policeman or work within the ski industry how can you give such a generalised statement regarding on piste theft for the hundreds of resorts in Japan.
skidaisuki 0
danc72 - obviously you know better!
likesDaPow 0
I always put one ski and one poll in the rack and the other ski and poll 3 or 4 racks away. Don't se many people taking one ski or hunting the other one down. But I had expensive equipment a lock and piece of mind would be worth it
likesDaPow 0
theres no such thing as crime in Japan!!!
SirJibAlot 0
I used to not lock up my board, but a buddy of mine had his horked in Cali. After that, I keep my stick locked up nice and tight whether i'm boarding in Cali, Japan, NZ, or New Hampshire. Nothing would ruin a day of boarding more than to come back with a stomach full of katsu and no board to ride on. -SJA
Ezorisu 0
In J, I usually don't lock my board unless: 1) I'll be inside for a really long time 2) It's windy out 3) The resort is crowded Never had any probs (knock on wood), but I don't know if it's any different down on Honshu than it is on Hokkaido. I'd definitely lock my board at Niseko - that's not part of Japan anymore, right? I always lock my board in North America. (I'm just answering the original post - not trying to give anyone advice on what to do or not to do)
number9 0
How many people have had their skis stolen? Once the bindings are drilled into the boards set exactly to your boot size, does the thing have any resale/reuse value?
surfinsmiley 0
No locks but good eyes and better feet and fists than most............it would be a "PRIDE" fight free of charge to onlookers.
Mantas 3
You would have to catch the prick in the act first.
SirJibAlot 0
This is what I lock my board up with... http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductD....jpg&view=large I don't use one of those sissy microcable locks....this thing is solid. -SJA
fukdane 2
Kryptonite! Sounds cool. I bet you get some looks locking your board up with that. Not that you care. I am going looking for something tomorrow.
SirJibAlot 0
It's ok, I look like a criminal anyway. I probably get more looks when I'm unlocking it - people probably think I'm ripping it off. -SJA
amandanism 0
i always lock my board up. i think that as soon as you have felt the feeling of having something meaningful or expensive stolen from you, you pretty much do everything in your power to eliminate it happening again. mina2 6
Went looking in 2 sports shops here yesterday and couldn't find any locks of any kind. My first run in a few hours, can't wait.
midnightcharger2 0
The ski resorts will definitely have some shop of some kind either in the counter area or around the ski-jo. You can find a lock there
eskimobasecamp 0
some members of the ski patrol at happo got busted a few years back for nicking skis and then selling them on ebay. i was just saying to AK earlier, i wanna lock up my new skis, they stick out a mile sitting next to the others and have 48,000 yen bindings on them!!!!! i'm going to buy a lock.
