It was time for Becks to go, I'm glad he stood down. Next up Terry or maybe Gerrard?

If reports are to be believed Ronaldo is really talking like he is off to Real. If it is true, I can't imagine Sir Alex being very impressed. I hope they get a huge loot for it. Either that or keep him and make him play our in the reserves or something ;\) Really not liking him at the mo

Portugal would be a undeserved World Champion (if they win), because they aren't playing good football.
They are very good in breaking and frustrating the opponents play. This is a interesting strategy to win, but not good enough for a world champion.
Remember Greece? thats what they did and won euro 2004.

I cant see C.Ronaldo being in the premiership next year, he already said he wants to join Real Madrid and now this.

Im supporting Italy from now on.

Your thoughts on the game bobby12?

I really hope Portugal don't win. It would not be good for football.

For me Terry or Gerrard will make a great captain.

In some ways I would prefer it to be Gerrard because I feel it would give him the freedom/confidence to rule the pitch like he does at Liverpool.

But I think it will be Terry, he seems like more of a natural leader. Plus Becks handed him the armband when he was taken off a few games ago.

Very unimpressed with the performances of England. Then again, people just seem to expect too much for them all the time. We should be more realistic ;\)

I think Terry would be a great captain - much better than Beckham.

I think england played much better this time around but couldnt finish. i think crouch for becks was a better fit but oh well. I didnt see that stamp as a red cars it was 2 on 1 and a ruckas. C.R. is a prat end of story. I hate seeing cheater go through. that ref missed 2 or 3 handballs 2 happened in the bloody box.

I wasn't expecting Italy to be in the final. Enjoyed watching the game though. Germany must be gutted.

Footie, hey? \:\)

I think you mean Ronaldo, Bushpig. He is the one who needs to stop scoffing all those pies...

I've had basically the same discussion about this topic with my upstairs neighbor. He said he's never seen anything like this in the country before.

How did the people on your side of the country handle the loss last night? I've never seen such a dejected mass of people in my life. Thousands were filing out of the downtown area and all you could hear was the shuffling of feet and the occassional I-tal-ia...oohhhhh oh. It was a great game, however and I really enjoyed it considering I was sitting with 1,000 complete strangers.

spud - how ya adjusting to Deutschland? I'm really liking it here so far. Now, if only my stuff from Alaska would show up I could do some camping, fishing, biking and hiking! The slowness of the shipment is getting a tad ridiculous!

Hi Plucky, life is good!

The short answer is that I am quite happy, this part of Germany is very nice (for somewhere so far from the mountains).

People where quiet here last night and today. Just like you described it.

Is Bavaria treating you well?

The long answer.... which is really quite off topic and boring.

For a boring city with no ocean and no mountains, it is actually a very pleasant, comfortable, relaxing, friendly, international and civilised place to live (Dusseldorf). The value for money and quality of life is very good. I can't think of anything really good about the city, except for a few modern designer buildings the architecture is a non-event... there isn't any outstanding feature to recommend Dusseldorf for and I doubt I would convince anyone to go there for a holiday. But yet it is a nice place to live. If I have yo live in a city that has none of the physical attributes that I want then this is a petty nice choice. The people are also annoyingly friendly. They all want to chat. But it is nice to have a genuine 'good morning' offered to me by various people each day. Even strangers in the lift greet me. Girls smile and look confident. People engage each other in conversation and ALWAYS arrange a casual lunch date with a friend or colleague. I have been asked to lunch by a different person every single day. It is forcing me out of my shell, but also refreshing to see it (reminds me a little of Japan, the lunch date thing. Why eat alone?)

The food is also very much like food should be: simple and enjoyable meat and vegetables cooked and eaten by people who enjoy cooking and eating it for more than the need to stay alive or to make an income. Eating here is fun and everyone enjoys doing it. Socialising here is also fun and people do it because they like it, not because they need to get drunk (even though they do). There are lots of chances to eat out, but also lots of chances to buy your own produce. And it is excellent. The range of bread is great. Plus the everyday side of the road supermarkets are amazingly good. I cant help compare top the horrible Tesco's style in the UK. Even better, there is a bio/organic grocery chain called Basic. It is the best I have ever seen. Yesterday for the first time in 4 years (2 Japan, 2 UK) I walked into a CBD grocery shop and bought a 1 litre tub of pure creamy mild natural yoghurt. No fancy marketing angle, no fat reduction or flavours or artificial thickeners, (like most UK 'yoghurt'), not Greek yoghurt. Just plain simple pure yoghurt. It then took me 10 minutes to choose from the incredible range of muesli, rather than get depressed by the the terrible offerings from some 'in house' brand and nothing else. It is so good to be able to buy god decent unprocessed food again. And that includes the beer.

The rules here are also quite an advantage. Play by them and life is a breeze. In my first week here I opened a bank account, got a credit card and atm card and in numbers, registered at the council office, received a tax card, took out a mobile phone contract, got broadband internet, took out health insurance, found an apartment. There is no way even as an English speaker, I could do all of that in less than a week in either the UK or Australia (and forget Japan), It helps to have a work contract in my hand, but at that stage I had not even had my residence permit stamped into my passport. And when I did attend the Foreign Office to have my visa granted, rather than get a left over Gestapo officer in a drab brown office (as the stereotype would dictate), I got two 40 year old tanned blond ladies with saggy breasts who were flirting with me in a way that was almost embarrassing.

Started German lessons today.
