  1. A little civility goes a long way. We all should respect the local’s customs and traditions. Granted we may not be able to speak the language but a few phrases like please and thank you help. As far as parting goes have some drinks and a good time but keep the noise to a minimum. Would you want a roaring party going on outside your window to all hours of the morning when you have to work the next day, most likely not. I’m sure the people in Niseko don’t want to hear your carrying on either. Lets all have a good time and enjoy the snow, that’s what were all here for.
  2. Try ICI sports. They have several locations in Sapporo. Think there is one in the covered walkway. south 2 west 4 or there abouts. just walk south from the JR about 8 or 9 blocks or take subway and get off at odori.
  3. I have had the opportunity to ski in many different places around the world and there are many places that has not lost its charm. One town that comes to mind is Kitzbuhel it still has an Austrian charm to yet is international. Almost all the building there are built to the Austrian style. There are plenty of places to eat, shop or party. In my opinion most J resort towns are rather dumpy. They almost seem lost back in 60’s. In Hirafu I don’t think you can even find I a ski shop. Restaurants there are ok at best. Rooms are reasonable which are a good thing but then again nothing speci
  4. You can use the Post ATM at the post office and elsewere for money. Most places over here will take cards.
  5. Sakebomb You should let your skis cool indoors after you finish ironing your wax in. It's not good to let them cool outside. For some good tips go to http://www.tognar.com/tips_tricks_information_ski_snowboard_waxing_tuning_repair_tools.html They have the most complete selection of tuning stuff for your glide I've seen. They also will ship internationaly
  6. I know when I learned to ski back in the dark ages, saftey was always stressed. I just dont think it is any more. Then again I have not taken a lesson in a while. Things like not skiing fast into a controlled area like around lifts or where major trails merge or giving a heads up to a slower skier as to the side your going to pass him on.
  7. Scrapers are relativly cheap $5-10 at a ski shop. Get one for snow boards there wider. Irons on the other hand can be expensive. A good wax iron may cost $100. But you can get away with a chep travel iron or if your SO has an old iron. You might be able to use it Rember once you use it no clothes afterwards. one other thing teflon or no stick bottoms is a no go. Your edges will start to scape, flake the no stick into you wax.
  8. Wax in my tatami room all the time. As stated use plenty of ventilation and or respirator. I don’t but some people do. Spread a drop cloth on the ground. Mount some vices to a table. Mount board / ski to vice. I then use my iron to drip wax on to my skis. Then iron in with your iron. Don’t use too much heat if it starts smoking its too hot. The smoke is toxic. Once its ironed in use a scraper to scrape of excess wax. Next step is to use your brushes too take it down to a fine layer. Different brushes for different waxes and base structure. It’s also not wise to mix fluro carbon wi
  9. Thin socks only. A good pair of ski socks should have a little bit of extra padding in the shin. They also will not bunch up in the ankel when you flex forward. Try a pair of Bridgedales. Best sock I've found for skiing.
  10. Started telemarking last year. On Teles which i will be taking can get down a medium intermideate run. But if i have to i can get down harder things if i have to. Thanks alot tsondaboy
  11. Nigata never gave it alot thought. Can you recomend anthing there?
  12. I’m gong to be in Tokyo for week of work and I managed to get a free weekend to ski. So I’m looking to go up to the Nagano area for the weekend. The question I have is which place is best for two days. I’m looking at the weekend of the Feb. 4 ,5 or 11,12. For transportation I’m looking at Tokyo-Nagano by Shinkasuen then Nagano to ski area by bus. I noticed a bus from Nagano to 47 that was run by the ski area but it only runs once in the morning. Are there any other buses? Can some one recommend a cheap place to stay? Thanks
  13. Try some stuff called "goo gone" its a citrus based cleaner. Dont know if you can get it over here. You may have to have some someone from the states send it over. It should clean it up.
  14. Niseko might not be to far maybe a couple of hours. Plenty of ggood stuff there.
  15. welcome Enjoy your stay in Sapporo and the sorrounding areas. Been here jst shy of 2 years and love the place.
  16. Thanks for the info #9. I guess I have to get up a little earlier so I can get over to Tokyo station.
  17. ok things are diffrent now as compared to back then, but there are things you can do as a parent. In the summer i make it a point to take the kids for a bike ride after work. In the winter I try to take them up skiing on the weekends. My daughter is in a gymnastis/fitness class and my son takes karate. This means the wife and I usally have to shutel the kids to class. It requires some commitment on my wifes and my part but the kids do get in some exercise.
  18. i use http://www.weather-forecast.com/locations/Sapporo.shtml for Sapporo. You can get to other cities in Japan from here. they also have links to snow reports
  19. A little bit of a thred hijack. When it says departs Tokyo. Is that Tokyo Station or Shinjuku. May be going up that way in Feb.
  20. seems like a lot of us spent time outdoors as kids. I guess thats why we ski/board.
  21. I consider myself a little over weight by Japan standards at least. But when I'm home in the states I feel like a rail. Most everyone here has brought some good points about food in the states. JUST SUPERSIZE ME. I could not believe portion size in the states. I could never finish a meal there way to big. Combine this with a sedentary lifestyle and you have a recipe for blimps. Case and point I have a friend she is Asian her husband is American their son is extra fat. Every time I see him he has his face in the feed bag and sits in front of the video game playing the latest and grea
  22. Just looking at the forecast for Saporro temps were warmer but still below frezeing. Which is good
