I just made a stuffed pork roast. Stuffed with finely chopped onions bacon garlic and cheese. Grilled each side for 30 secs and then placed it in my roast pan. Thickly cut potatoes, Carrots, Onions and bacon were thrown in the pan as well. seasoned with salt, peper and rosemary.

As a side dish found some cauliflower (bought cheap)and steamed lightly, Then PAn fried with onions and eggplant.

All topped off with homemade gravey

abd fresh french bread

Pork was 200 yen half price day.

bread 150

etc

The whole meal cost about 500 yen to make. I love food and I love cooking. Lots of leftovers.

kamo.... did we post at the same time or what!

Japanese people almost jack off on food.

The telly is fully of shows showing those crew doing that oiiiiiiiiishiiiiiiiiii, hands covering the mouth talking thing etc etc.

Then they travel specifically to a place to eat a certain dish!

more like eating holidays...?????

I too had always heard British food was "mazui" but I recently started going to a British pub that serves excellent food in my opinion! Also, that Jamie chef guy is good fun to watch. If you've got LaLa (372) Sky perfect you can catch him all the time.

The cooking TV shows here are a bit excessive. Every channel's the FOOD NETWORK! Indosnm is correct. I just once would like to see one of the people on the show chomp their food...do the "I'm thinking" look, and say "MAZUI!...THIS SUCKS!!!" It's just too predictible and boring..the "oishii na!"... look around to the others and add "ne, ne, ne!"

My wife's explanation to the excessiveness (she provided one to get me to stop complaining to her)is that after the WAR Japan had no food nor money. When they started to get rich and more cosmopolitan it was an important topic in all aspects of social life to those that remembered having to live on rations and basically no choices.

There is a Japanese cooking show where they say "MAZUI!"; can't remember the channel/time, but I think it's on Tuesdays around 11pm on Channel 8(?) and features one of the SMAP guys. They basically pull two girls off the street (ideally fancy-shmancy girls shopping), put them in a kitchen full of ingredients, and tell them a specific dish to make without providing the recipe (ie tiramisu).

The eating panel features the SMAP guy and 3 other "stars" who will have to eat whatever the girls make. They watch the preparation through a hidden camera and recoil as the girls over-salt, over-sweeten, or over-sour the dishes beyond belief.

In the end, they eat the food and the pair of stars who can keep eating the longest "wins". A bit harsh on the girls sometimes, but it helps to balance all of the other shows with people blindly screaming "oishii! umaii!".

The Japanese do seem particularly obsessed with food, and very proud of their own cuisine too. I generally love the food here, but coming to think of it love food wherever I go - you've just got to find the right places to eat.

I cant believe Slow said Japanese food isnt fattening! Seriously, food is deep fried in everthing, oil dressings galore and lets not even get into the red meat vs white fat ratio of meat here.

Oh for a lean slice of lamb!

I think there are very very few healthy alternatives in Japan, bentos have fried everything and at the konbini there is little snack-wise to fill you up apart from onigiri and nikuman (the latter which is pretty greasy).

Im going to get shot down for this but I dont really like Japanese food either, it tastes bland and is either shoyu/sugar flavour or miso. Nice makizushi or sansai soba has its place but Id go for a filled wholemeal roll you can eat while you drive.

And there is mayonaise on everything.

Oh for a good cafe with lots of tasty yummy healthy selections!

Jamie Oliver makes good tasty hearty meals that fill you up, taste fantastic, arent fussy and are simple to make. As do lots of other people in homes.

And we get stick for not trying stuff when I remember having a homestay in NZ when I was at high school who looked at her roast lamb and would even try it because "lamb smells bad".

Something I do feel strongly about and are looking forward to some good western food.

i like the show nigella bites. yeah i guess it's not so good for following an exact recipe, but it's different with the fancy shots and mouth-watering dishes. i read an article which called the show food porn .

Why thanking ye kindly, Mr Fattwins sir. I'll pass on the compliment. Come round for more sometime. The missus is going to Italian cooking lessons twice a month and some of the things she's picked up have been well good.

On our recent hols, we brought back a load of jasmine rice from Thailand, so we've been making a lot of SE Asian food. In case anyone is interested, I believe you can bring in 5Kg of rice per person without paying duty. It might sound like a hassle, but when you get the jasmine rice or basmati rice aroma floating around your pad, you KNOW it's worth it \:D

I sometimes get the strong feeling that many Japanese have the feeling that Japanese food is "special" in a way that no other is - and that they have more discerning tastes than us dirty gaijin ;\)

I agree w/ you oblivion....my step father often tells me how this peach or that strawberry is the BEST IN THE WORLD. Now, I haven't travelled the world over trying the local peaches or strawberries or mellons so I can't really say one way or the other. On fruits though I do concede that Japan grows some pretty tasty stuff.

I think the omiyage system has created the beliefs you speak of. You hear Kobe beef is the best..Yamagata fruits...Hokkaido seafood...Fuji apples...actually every prefecture has a best 'something' and chances are it's known to be the best in the world.

I politely smile and say "oishii" lol.gif

It was a joke PJ. Of course it does...we could start a whole 'nuther topic here!

I think if you read this thread from the beginning you'll understand. \:\)

I think you misunderstood too! When I said "Thats all you can say", I meant that all you (generally) can do is agree with Japanese when they start going all oishii on ya. I was agreeing with you.
