nori-chan 0
I wonder if you can help me! I am writing essay for college project, and part of it is the image of Japan outside of Japan. I am interested in knowing who are well known Japanese people in your country? If you tell me about it, please also note about the country also. It's big help thank you! montoya 0
Well, if you want recent people, baseball players in America are pretty famous and appear regularly in the US media: Hideki Matsui Kazuo Matsui Ichiro Suzuki Hideo Nomo For recent movies, Ken Watanabe from "Last Samurai" has also received alot of press coverage in the US. nagoid 4
Beat Takeshi seems fairly well known as an actor/director (not as a tarennto) The Dump Truck Konishiki
Markie 0
Yes, Takeshi Kitano is quite famous here and I like his movies a lot.
nzlegend 1
Yoko Ono would have to be the most universally known of all Japanese people, go anywhere in the world and ask them who is Yoko Ono?
Ocean11 0
Pikachu Godzilla And nearly every house in the UK used to have a Yagi TV receiver on it, but nobody knows it is a Japanese invention.

I_HATE_CHEESE 0
On a "infamous" note. "Admiral Yamamoto" is a household in the West, especially with the older generation. He is infamous but he is as well known as any Japanese person in history.
Markie 0
I don't know whether it is correct to say Admiral Yamamoto is "infamous". It has always been my impression that he is well-respected in the West. It's not like he committed any horrendous war crimes of anything.
Ocean11 0
I would have thought Tojo was more well-known in the West than Yamamoto.
mattlucas 0
Does it have to be a person from Japan or just Japanese decsent. David Suzuki in Canada is huge. Big environmental guy with numerous international awards.
damian 0
In Australia I would say no modern day Japanese people are a household name. Kamo points out Yoko Ono quite correctly as a very well known name from the past. However before I came here, I didn't know of any famous Japanese people. To be honest, after 2 years here I still don't know the names of any famous Japanese people. Hang on, I knew the name Akibono as I saw him fight in a big Sumo tournament in Sydney quite a few years ago.
