Just watching the news here and there was a pretty big train crash in Kobe this morning at 9:30am. The news pictures look pretty bad, one carridge literally wrapped around a building. So far 2 fatalities and about 185 casualities, but the number is rising. Hope all SJ people down that way are ok.

the train jumped the tracks before getting into Amagasaki because of a car. You see it laying there in the first floor of that apartment complex?? Could you imagine eating breakfast and then BAM!!! WTF? eek.gif

So far like Farquah said, 2 dead 185 injured... my schools worried that we had students on that.

KOBE — Two people were killed and 140 injured when three train cars derailed and overturned after hitting a car and then slamming into an apartment building Monday morning in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, police and firefighters said.

The accident involving a seven-car express train occurred near a railway crossing between Amagasaki and Tsukaguchi stations on JR West's Fukuchiyama Line, which was equipped with a breaker and alarm signals. The three train cars derailed and slammed into a passenger car at around 9:20 a.m., and the first train car crashed into the ground floor of the apartment building, the police said. (Kyodo News)

Hope everyone is okay. That line passes Davo's new place. You okay man?

The Beeb may be reporting it from Kobe, but the crash site is actually much closer to Osaka. The vast majority of people on that train would be Osaka bound, not Kobe bound. Amagasaki is in Hyogo (main city=Kobe), but borders and shares the same telephone code (06) as Osaka.

The news reckons the train was running slightly late after slightly overshooting the platform at an earlier station.

You know I've had a few eyebrow raising experiences on trains here that have been running late* - I have sometimes thought a train was going way too fast. This doesn't really surprise me.

* Oh yeah, and when I say late I mean like 1 minute late, not 30+ minutes late.

From what I have read and heard,

#1. This fast train (Kaisoku ressha) overshoot the platform in Itami station and got 1 min & 30 secs delayed to go back to stop the correct location.

#2.The passengers felt the train was running a bit too faster than usual after the Itami station overshooting.

#3. The driver is a 23 years old with a 11 months experience ( maybe he should still have a veteran driver besides him to monitor ) and the conductor is a 47 years old veteran.

#4.The place where the train got derailed is a tight curve which is 300 meters in radius which is nearly one of the tightest curve of JR lines.

#5.The speed limit is 70kms/h, but probably the train ran faster than that.

#6. After the Tokyo metro (ex.Eidan chikatetsu) Hibiya line accident some years back, the Ministry of transport and national land agency set a guideline which says they have to have some inside rails to spare to avoid trains get derailed, but there's no inside rails there where this accident happened.

#7. As is often the case with newer rail cars recently, the body of this JR West 207 series is made of stailness which is lighter than steel.

This may cause this accident has this many people killed and injured. Specialists says if these rail cars are made of steel, perhaps the number of the victims would be less than the half. Nowadays railway companies tend to have stainless or alminium rail cars which are lighter and cheaper than steel.

#8 A.T.S ( Auto Train Stop) system there is the oldest one which doesn't work to restrain /control train speed. This type of A.T.S works to control blockade sections - allows only 1 train to get in a blocade section.

I'm ok thanks Mr Wiggles and so is a mate of mine who normally takes that very train almost every day. Lucky for him he went to work early today. Lucky for me I went late. I don't have a regular train cause I work flexitime and have various morning classes. Freaky feeling though. Had I been due at work around 10:00 this morning I could well have been in one of those two front carriages.

I was just about to head in to work when I saw it on the news. Took the Hankyu instead and got to appreciate how slow it goes for once-not such a bad thing it seems.

That corner, if I'm not mistaken, is where the train usually slows right down. I can't imagine it going fast there at all. It may turn out to be a combination of factors, but without the excess speed I doubt it would happen.

I feel very sorry for anyone involved in this. I can't imagine how it would feel to have someone you love go to work, by what you'd assume to be the safest way to get there, and for them not to come home. I'm lucky to be here at home with my family. Found it hard to concentrate on my work today thinking about it.
