Kumapix 0
none of the changes are permanent until you export = resaving in jpeg = loss
Fattwins 0
At least take pics you know that you want to edit in RAW BP. stuff for memories etc then go easy and jpeg them.
bushpig 0
kuma, the point is that if you save once for jpeg with edits, yeah it gets slightly decreased, but if you go back and slightly change an edit, then you are still working on the original, not the resaved version. So you don't get a double loss. Just the one. FT, I know that, and will get there. I'm just taking my time until I have my head around it a bit better. RAW takes more fiddling, because you are not leaving the WB, etc up to the camera. So you have to manually go back and set it yourself. More time consuming. So I wanna have a good workflow down pat before I jump into that.
Tentacle Party 0
I have a question, my Panasonic DMC-LX2 has a problem with its lens motor. When i turn the camera on the lens motor whirs, but it just clicks and the lens doesn't extend, maybe a cog or drive is loose or broken. This happened between normal shooting, it wasn't dropped. My question is where in or around Hakuba or Nagano can i get warranty repairs on my Panasonic? Or if i have to bite the bullet, does anyone know of any camera repair stores? Bonus pic before it died, blue skies over Hakuba... EDITED: Sorry, no links to pages of porn please. (I realise you probably didn't know that!) You can upload photos to SJ if you want. big-will 7
I would say Nagano city surely. Lots of people here seem to buy new rather than repair.

Hi BP, Just a thought, I use Canon stuff and on a Canon, in the menu, it allows you to choose a shooting format of RAW & JPEG, so when you shoot in RAW it also gives you the same shot as a JPEG. It might be similar on a Nikon. Yes, shooting in RAW is a bit more complicated but it sure opens up a wider range of editing options. I have always used the standard Canon digital photo professional to convert my shots after I have done the intial tweeks, then send it to photoshop for fine tuning but I was very impressed with Ian's Lightroom program. (His shots weren't bad either!!)

Kumapix 0
you CAN leave the wb up to the camera in raw.
spook 0
i'm curious as to what photo storing and editing programs does everyone use - and anyone got views on aperture on macs?
thursday 1
Yes, the Nikon does have raw + Jpeg option. But this really fills up the buffer quickly which the card, even an extreme one, finds hard to keep up when you're shooting multi. For my portrait shots, I usually shoot off about 4 in a row. contender 0
Im using Lightroom as the standard program and if needed I'll open the image in Photoshop but for 80% of the images LR is enough.
thursday 1
I use Photoshop Elements if I need to touchup.
John Deere 0
RAW is fine if you are not shooting in burst mode. I like to take my 40 jpegs at 5fps to fill up my buffer. If you use raw you will only get about 10 on ur buffer!
thursday 1
interesting that theres now an 18-55 VR lens. Used to think VR very useful for 200mm plus cos of slow shutter speeds. Looks like VR is the way to go.
contender 0
Yepp, VR/IS is the way to go. Look at Canon, they have IS on 18-55, 17-85 and 17-55/2.8.

Kingofmyrrh 0
Hi, Am looking to get a new camera. I don't really want a DSLR as 1) I know I would be too lazy to carry it around everywhere and miss loads of shots; and 2) I am just a particularly good photographer and don't "deserve" anything too good. The Canon Powershot G9 has come to my attention as a possible candidate. Pretty full featured but still relatively compact. I had a go with a ski companion's G7 (predecessor) for a short minute and it seemed to work just fine. The view finder was a bit small, which I wasn't too keen on, but the screen was large which sort of compensated. Does anyone have any opinions? Obviously looking at this with a heavy slant towards snow photography.
bushpig 0
sorry, don't know squat about compacts...
thursday 1
The G9 is indded fully featured with face recognition and all. Not tried it though some colleagues who have it are quite pleased with it. You are not allowed to change the title of this holy thread. I've changed it back.
