Tubby Beaver 209
at least he's safe, but that must have been terrifying. The video footage of the giant whirlpool was pretty scary as well
dale#1 1
Some of the images look more 'awesome' (if that's the word) than top special effects on some Hollywood disaster movie. That tsunami eating up the rice fields has to be the maddest of the lot.

iiyamadude 6
That was bloody strong this morning I'm not far from Sakae and Nozawa of course so must have been at least 5+ What a way to be woken up. Seen a few collapsed buildings in Sakae as well as the train line dangling down. Awful, I hope this is all a bad dream.

pie-eater 207
Hmm. Neither of those sound very gnarly. I don't understand all this and I don't think the dudes on telly are doing a good job. But if water is a problem why can't they get some water flown in? Or do they need special brand water, like Perrier or something?
RobBright 35
Because the pumps aren't working to pump the water in. Usually, the system is self-sufficient, ie the water turns to steam (6), which turns the generators (9), producing electricity enough electricity for you and I, but also providing some to the pumps to pump water back in (15). The power plant has secondary, and usually, tertiary back up generators, which are diesel powered, to carry on the pumping process, even after the reactor has shut down. The problem in this case is that these back up generators aren't working, and as such, the water isn't moving around the system to cool down the rods.
pie-eater 207
It all sounds very complicated. I demand that they fix it with great haste! They should have designed it so that someone could use a pot or big jug and pour the water in from the top and use gravity, thereby not needing a pump.
RobBright 35
That's what the tried to do in chernobyl and looked what happened there.
