Hakuba is now in green mode as the last of the ski resorts have closed for the season.

This winter season was a real return to the classic days of big snow in Hakuba. Lots of huge snowfalls and many many epic powder days to recall. With good late season dumps even in late March the people that stuck around were treated to powder and little crowds on many of the resorts in Hakuba.

We now are looking forward to a nice spring and summer season here it the Northern Japan Alps, getting out on mountain bikes, playing in the lakes and rivers and hiking in the alpine peaks. Since the snowfall was quite a lot this winter we expect the snowfields to linger late into the summer. Hiking up high will definitely be on some snow until it really warms up, those intrepid skiers and riders can still get turns atop Tsugaike in the Shizenyen and Norikura areas, as well as on Daisuke snowfield. Canyoning season has started and will be wild and wet until October.

Happo-One, Hakuba-47, Goryu and Tsugaike have their gondolas open for hiking in the summer and the views atop the peaks are spectacular on clear days. One can also hike from hut to hut in the summer and fall season. Hakuba-47 also is planning to have their MTB trails open and are planning a few events over the green season.

Summer Gondolas in Hakuba:

Happo - the Hakuba Alpen line (Gondola and two quads) is open from 15th May until 3rd November.

Hakuba 47 - the Gondola will be open from 17th July until 31st August

Goryu - the Gondola will be operating daily from 16th June until 3rd November. The top lift will also be operating every day from 19th June until 31st August
and then on Saturdays and holidays (and 24th Sept) from 4th September until 11th October.

Tsugaike Kogen - the Gondola will be operating from 20th May until 3rd November.

-----

So for all you snow lovers, get out and enjoy the fun of the off" season in the Japan Alps, train up for next season and keep fingers crossed for an even better snowy winter in Hakuba!

See you in the run up to next season.

Weather conditions: Fine conditions
New snowfall: -

Just a quick update on this last day of the season in Hakuba - in a few hours Goryu will close for the last time this season. It is fairly busy up on the mountain as people get in their last ski and snowboard of the season but there is still good cover up there. More fine weather but it has cooled down since the hot days late on in Golden Week, not quite reaching 20 degrees today in the village.

We'll be back soon with a season wrap-up with some info on what lifts will be open for the summer months in Hakuba.

Wednesday 5th May 2010, 10:12AM
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: 0 cm
Snow depth: 125 cm (Goryu top)
Good morning. And it is another very warm and sunny hazy day in Hakuba with temperatures already in the low 20s - it will be pretty warm up on the mountains too. Nice way to end the season.

Well, it is now the last day of the season at the Hakuba 47 and Happo-one resorts in Hakuba and the Tsugaike Kogen resort in nearby Otari. Hakuba 47 hasn't quite mananged to be open right down to base until the end, with the bottom of Route 1 now closed due to the snow drying up - they are asking people to use the Gondola to get down to base, but I'm sure there won't be any complaints there!

Hakuba Goryu will be continuing on until Sunday (9th) but after that there won't be any lift-serviced resort skiing and snowboarding on offer in Hakuba.

Monday 3rd May 2010, 1:06PM
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: 0 cm
Snow depth: 125 cm (Goryu top)
A quick update with the latest weather from Hakuba --- and it's very fine. Lots of sun and warm temperatures, rising into the low 20's in the village. It's looking like the last two holidays of Golden Week, tomorrow and Wednesday, will also give us very similar conditions.

There's a lot of people out and about, both on the slopes and also people just in the area to spend some time sightseeing and enjoying the outdoors. And a fine time it is to be doing both!

Just to recap on what remains open:
At Hakuba 47 you can still ride down to the base. The connection with Goryu remains open, but only the top area of that resort remains open. Only the upper slopes of Happo remain open and you need to get the Gondola up there (and back down again). From tomorrow until 5th May the resort will be putting on a bus service between the Happo Bus Terminal and the Happo No 3 car park. The upper slopes of Tsugaike Kogen also remain open.

Happo-one - open until 5th May
Hakuba Goryu - open until 9th May
Hakuba 47 - open until 5th May
Tsugaike Kogen - open until 5th May

Hakuba Goryu:

Hakuba 47:

Friday 30th April 2010, 1:29PM
Weather conditions: Cloud, fine
New snowfall: 0 cm
Snow depth: 140 cm (Goryu top)
After a dull start to the day and some rain in the morning yesterday, it cleared up a bit before clouding over again in the afternoon.

It has been cloudy in Hakuba this morning but while the mountains have cloud hanging about on top, more blue sky is now appearing.

From tomorrow, it's a run of five holidays in Japan - the main part of Golden Week. And it looks like we are going to see lots of fine and sunny conditions for all of that period, along with temperatures warming up to close to 20 degrees perhaps at village level - especially between Sunday and Wednesday.

So it should be a good end to the official season at the resorts.

Just to recap on what remains open:
At Hakuba 47 you can still ride down to the base. The connection with Goryu remains open, but only the top area of that resort remains open. Only the upper slopes of Happo remain open and you need to get the Gondola up there (and back down again). Wednesday 28th April 2010, 4:56PM
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny
New snowfall: 0 cm
Snow depth: 145 cm (Goryu top)
After a wet and rainy start to the day today, the weather has turned out to be fine and sunny this afternoon. It is now a lovely sunny and rather warm afternoon in Hakuba with most of the cloud moving on leaving us with very clear views of the mountains.

Tomorrow is the first national holiday of "Golden Week". Friday is not a national holiday but Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week are, so come Saturday lots of people will be enjoying a 5 day holiday - and we can expect more people to be coming for that last ski and snowboard of the season.

Next Wednesday will also be the last official day of the season at the Happo-one, Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike Kogen resorts in the region, leaving just Goryu open for a few extra days until the 9th... so we are into the final stretch now. Last chance for on-resort fun.

As for the weather over Golden Week - tomorrow there is a chance of rain in the morning but it should clear up like today and after that from Friday through until the end of Golden Week it looks like it is going to generally be fine and sunny with warm temperatures.

Official resort snow depths on 28th Apr 10:

Happo-one:
100cm (Kurobishi/Usagidaira)
