Liverpool get go-ahead for new stadium:

Liverpool have received the go-ahead from the city council to build a new 60,000 all-seater stadium.

Council leaders approved a 999-year lease on Friday for a piece of land in the city's Stanley Park, just 300 yards away from their Anfield home.

"It's all systems go. All we need now is the club to confirm the funding," said council leader Warren Bradley.

Liverpool have until the end of September to convince the council it can come up with £180m for the project.

If financing is approved, building work could begin early next year with the first match pencilled in for August 2009.

Bradley added: "If Liverpool have the funding in place, they can start on the site from January."

The overall cost of the first phase of the project will be £215m.

It includes the new stadium which incorporates a centre with facilities for education, sport and community activities, along with a fully restored Stanley Park.

Look at Arsenal down there in 17th! When we beat them next weekend they'll look even more miserable. \:\)

stanley park is bigger than a football stadium, so they build the stadium and do up ther rest of it. the everton stadium and the old liverpool stadium are also in the park. im not sure what will happen to the old stadium once the new one is built but no doubt itll be knocked down and turned into something.

I don't know Liverpool very well at all, but I thought they were in the middle of housing estates on either side of the park, not actually in it (?)

Look here

I took this photo over summer. ;\)

You can see 2 footie grounds - the one to the north of the park is Goodison Park (Everton) and the one to the south of the park is Anfield (Liverpool). You can see the pretty big park between the two.

That should give you an idea \:\)

Cheers.

It's sad.

Highbury had a great atmosphere.

The new Arsenal stadium does not. Not in the least.

All about money of course, but a shame that places like Highbury and Anfield with all their history be gone.

Have you read about Sven being "fed up" with being called incompetent and withdrawing from some speech or something. Ah, poor boy. Well not poor at all actually, quite rich. At least he gets a bit of "fed up" feeling.

It was funny there was a quote from his mate in the BBC news online saying something like 'he has his money now but he is not quite happy' as if he is a boy who finally got bought the teddy bear in toys r us but got so scolded for it that it wasnt quite worth it.
