Bus and train timetables
gamera replied to panhead_pete's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Holo I think the Super Azusa which departs Shinjuku at 10 a.m. may reach directly Hakuba in some winter dates as it did in some busy periods in the past. It's available daily to Matsumoto, but only in some specific dates beyond Matsumoto for Hakuba. Just check it time to time. Good luck -

Some of my pc have Norton in them and one has Virusbastars in it. Both are okay, when they start scanning the computers, I just let them go and don't do anything on them because while they work for that, it's very slow if I do anything on them. >Friday that it has scanned around 13,000 files Only 13,000? Must be a new pc, Kintaro. The Norton in my laptop says something like 650,000.

Put on weight or lost weight in Japan

Perhaps I am not qualified to post here coz I've lived in Japan entire my life. When I came back from Europe for about 40 days travel when I was 21 years old , I found I had lost 13kgs!! Only in a 40 days though. Maybe the trip was tough coz it was just by myself. Lately I make it a rule to have a pack of natto at breakfast, a galss of sour water at lunch and a bunch of tofu at dinner to lose some neutral fat. Natto and tofu are okay, but a glass of sour water! Grrrrr.... very tough. -
I bought a bell to have on for myself to walk around outside. Try to stay home at night. I am behaving now.

Maybe less than 10 years? If people talk about some place name which existed a lot longer ago, I guess they say "mukashino *** town " instead of "kyu *** town". But anyway there's no border for the usage, so it's up to who talks about what. When we talk about some Japanese history, sometimes I find someone say "kyu- *** han(藩) = a feudal clan )which existed more than 100 years ago.

What does Habuka need?
gamera replied to panhead_pete's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I think at least #1. Unlimimted number of Happy 7 ski pass (not only 300 pieces every season) #2. Convenient shuttle bus service network which connect all mountains. #3. English signboards for those who don't speak Japanese. #4. Worldwide promotion standing on the strategic point of view, not on the diplomatic one. Maybe there must be a lot more, but it really depends on who says it. Different people have different qualifications. Some before me said a railway from Nagano, but I think it will be unprofitable, none wants to try. Weegeoff, I think perhaps because it's a bit -
Hakuba season pass with 30,000 yen
gamera replied to gamera's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I did apply yesterday. Still have never won yet though. Also created a screen grab for our newsletter subscribers to guide them for it because anyway the application form is only described in Japanese. I hope I'll win this time! -

pp, sometimes that alpico bus timetable lists both winter schedule and summer one. You need to be sure which is for winter. Good luck. -

hakuba map
gamera replied to damian's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Hum...le spud, probably not available in winter. There is the Obinata no yu hot spring just at the 322 icon but it's not available in winter they say because of deep snow which perhaps disable us to go deeper the 322? -

Do you smoke?
gamera replied to ghostofwar's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I had smoked more than 20 years but quit in April 2004. Now I'm completely okay with smokeless situation. -
Melsa - What if 10 ppl recommended 10 different places to stay and mountains? That is a really tough situation and unfortunately you never know what exactly is going on in each and every place until you get there Maybe it's a way for you to e-mail to all mountains and accoms and see how they seriously reply to your questions. Good luck.

Learning japanese with the help of a podcast!
gamera replied to micke's topic in General off-topic discussions
Singing some songs of the language works! Because you are to sing the same phrase over and over. Don't worry about understanding the meanings there. You just need to used the sound and the way to connect other sounds. I am not sure how Norweigian sounds like but that's how I have improved my English pronounciation. I also tried to listen to English tapes when i was a student, but it was not fun. I prefered to speak with people, but in my school days, no native English speaking teachers available Anyway, good luck! -

Has anyone here actually played soccer good? I was not interested in soccer before, but after the previous Wcup in 2002, it has gotten my attention a bit, still don't know rules completely though. When I watched the semi final ( Italy vs Germany), an Italian FWder Gilardino broke the right side and kicked the ball backwards and again kicked it straight to the goal but no luck Excited and wondered how come a player can do that good!? ( Because they are pro, duh!) Also saw some many other nice stuff like the super goal which Max Lodriguez of Argentine did. Very impressive.
