Crew - AK, EBC, Ryan, Hugh the ski pornstar, Yannick and Simon

We set off in great clear, zero wind conditions and hiked for about 1hr 30mins off the top of Happo One ski resort, after answering questions from several foreign riders curious about what was up there. Amongst the questions were classics such as "Do you need a beacon if you go up there?"..... "Where does it come out if you go up there?".... "Does it come back onto the resort if you go up there?" AK and I had a big discussion about this today --- and i concluded that the people asking these questions are thinking "off-piste" not backcountry. So YES, you do need a beacon, it comes out at various places depending on where you hike and ride.... and NO it doesn't come back onto the resort.

it all goes terribly wrong when AK falls down a huge hole into a waterfall on the VERY gnarly and VERY wrong exit route. a lot of mistakes were made that day, and AK and i have discussed it at length. i'll let AK tell this tale of the waterfall himself, if he wants to.

we organised a fairly swift rescue mission --- yannick and simon pulled him out of the 3-4m deep hole where he was waist deep in water, and along with ryan pulled out the first aid kit AK was carrying in his pack and stopped the gushing blood and got him bandaged up..... meanwhile hugh the ski pornstar and i gunned it out of the exit as fast as we could to get phone signal and get a car to the exit to pick up AK and get him to a doctor (THANK U MATT) ..... we kept in radio contact with ryan, simon and yannick while we were on our way out keeping up to date on the status of AK, who amazingly one-footed it out on his board.

while AK gets x-rays, mami nurse-attention, local anaethetic injections in his forehead (you didn't see the HUGE cut across his forehead in the previous shot, where he now has 12 stiches)..... the rest of the crew walk it back to the HPL and stop at mon pigeon in misorano along the way.

Bloody hell. AK Looks like half his nose has been butchered/seperated and pushed to the side of his face! Glad were all ok in the end. I assumed you used a rope to pull him out of his hole. Would be interested to hear more as to how difficult it was. If my memory serves me well this is not the 1st time somebody goes through the deck in that neck of the woods (CB)?

Hope AK recovers quickly.

ha ha before we ran into him i saw him and said.... "woaahh that dude's skis are really low on his pack" ... but then he did have them attached to a tiny camelbak bag ;\)

AK took a real beating up there, but i think he's ok - should have his nose re-set at hospital today. anyway, there's lots more - but if he wants to write about it, i'll let him do it.

we were all pretty lucky to get out the way that valley was set up - super steep walls of spring snow bearing down on us as we made fast moves through the very narrow gully, AK was looking around him for wet slides coming down, when he fell down that hole.

cb i wasnt there. I had a super sick day and when I got home AK was at my house and his face was in pieces.

I got really angry quick and im sorry about that AK. Please ask me, dave, rappie, mitch, matt or yusaku's friends before dropping something completely new.

Recon new areas with pics. had you reconed it you would never have gone there. bring a map thats why I leave the maps out at my place. You skied a covered river, and the first avalanche funnel that slams the 47 BC.

AK wear a helmut a light one for BC tours. you still would have cuts and a broken nose but maybe not the gash. Rocks falling in the spring are quite the danger.

This thread with its great pics (ps the best ones are in black and white EBC nice shots) is the prime example of a giant fark up. On so many levels you are lucky that you got out of there with just AKs face smashed up.

People< anyone you need to stop think and plan. have a route a b and c. You get into a place that you cant get out of you better have the timing right. If the timing isnt right you just dont go there.

To top this all off I had friends run the north faces yesterday and say that it was stable. Slides everywhere yesterday everywhere. Where are peoples heads and what are you guys thinking. If you intend to keep doing this then you should be thinking, thinking, thinking. The sking is second always second. A comment to me after this was "you wouldnt take me BC so I had to go with someone, its what I want to do" was a freaking shocker! Your wants should never control your brain.

Sorry this is a rant now, its not meant to attack anyone. This TR needs to be addressed for the stupidity level of running the south faces late on a sunny warm day and no reconing.

Sorry i couldnt help it a bit more 2 cents then I planned to do but things need to be balanced here.

AK and i have already had a VERY long discussion which goes well beyond what you have said here FT. I don't want to go over it all again here anyway. Lots of mistakes, lots of them. They will be re-addressd. And we were VERY lucky. There wasn't a single safe zone in sight down there, nothing. Fkn gnarly and never again. As we hiked further and further and it got later and later, i was looking at the North faces, saying to myself, we can't possibly be dropping South faces at this time on a sunny day..... i don't know why i did. AK made the same comments earlier in the morning before we even started hiking... still we both did it. The aspect we skied was safe, but the aspect we exited at was totally totally different, and had south facing shit hanging over us in the late sun. For some reason at the top, no one considered the change in aspect, which became all to obvious at the snow went from bulletproof to spring snow sluffing all over the show. We knew the choices, drop in ski this aspect, cross the flats, drop in on the same aspect again, and take the safer exit which other people ski out... but still probably not even safe at the time we did it in the sun OR go straight down into that gully like we did. We should have gone north and we didn't. In my mind there was too much talk about what people wanted to ski, rather than what was safe, but i didn't speak up... i will next time. We need maps, we need planning, we need plans b and c, we need people who have feckin credit on their phones, and we need first aid kits and training.
