kintaro 0
skiers, boarders, snowpeople in general...what is the worst thing you have done to yourself while on the slopes? I broke my leg and was in a full length leg cast for 3 months 2 years ago, had a normal season last year but I am getting a strange feeling i'm going to hurt myself again this year.. Snow sports are new to me (3 years new to me) so how inevitable is my next injury? Thank you
Yuki's Passion 1
On the slopes? Just a few broken fingers and cracked ribs. Luckily nothing too serious. Worst injury for me though was from pole vaulting. Broke my arm, compound fracture, spent almost 6 weeks in the hospital and three operations. Have any of you seen your own bone before?? kintaro 0
Yep, I saw my leg bone. Having already said "howdy" I don't want to see it again.
tsondaboy 0
Last year in kagura. Luckily for me it was the last day that I was planning to go snowboarding last season. I dislocated my collarbone and cracked 1-2 of my ribs. I had to quit the gym cause I couldn`t lift any weight for more than 2 months.
Ocean11 0
Deep bruising on my arms from impacts with trees and a big jump into a pile of ice blocks (I thought maybe I had broken my arm). The injury that I can still feel was from wiping out on a skateboard. I dug my elbow into the road and thereby damaged the 'laccy in my shoulder. It hurt like hell for weeks, and still hurts when I do shoulder exercises. Before I started snowboarding I had grown very averse to any kind of injury. Now getting hurt doesn't bother me much. spook 0
luckily for me i've never hurt myself bad. worst injury was the last day riding last season. bad stack and mild concussion. at least thats what i think it was, i couldn't think straight and had headaches for days. stupidly i've never worn a helmet before, but is now a must have. kintaro - that leg break sounds horrific. a friend of mine did a similar sounding thing. she hit a tree and snapped her femur. in her graphic retelling of the story she reckons her foot was next to her head and she thought her leg was severed. and being allergic to pethadine and not fluent in japanese she refused painkillers for 36 hours! hardcore. touch wood no one gets hurt this year. it's always grim watching ski patrol taking someone down in one of those sled/bodybag things. tsondaboy 0
Definitely a helmet is a "mast have" thing, I bought one myself last year. I had the helmet on when I fell so I guess that`s probably why although I slammed my head on the ground I had no injuries there. I have been in many conversations with friends, Japanese and Gaijins, and most of them think that helmet is just for showing off?????? I also use the helmet when I am riding my bicycle. I remember being asked by my Japanese girlfriend and her friends "why do I wear a helmet when I am riding the cyarinko". They all looked really surprised to see someone on the bicycle with a helmet and they even made fun of me. I was also asked "why do gaijins wear a helmet when riding the bicycle". Some people make me think that they have a complete lack of "sense of danger".
badmigraine 0
Mine is a tossup between tearing cartilage boarding the moguls at Naeba, or the fastest get-off I ever had--onto rocklike ice nonetheless--at Whistler last March. Whiplash like you wouldn't believe. MAN was I going fast!! The fastest I've ever gone on a board. Almost a year later I still get terrible neck aches and have popping in my vertabrae. A chiropractor helps, but I have to go every couple of months. With bum knees and a bad neck, I am not planning to be Dr. Danger on the slopes anymore. But then I get to the mountain, and forget about all that!!
Dean 0
Although not on the slopes, I am nursing a dislocated shoulder from 2 weeks ago which granted me a night in hospital here! The doctors still are amazed here take almost double the meds they give to the locals due to my 'sugoi karada'. Desperatley praying it will be better for new years, its slowly coming round. My worst injury......25 stitches in my face and almost 1L of blood loss last year due to a boarder hitting me and me falling on my ski edges....the killer is the guy didnt even stop!! but was on the slopes 2 weeks later.....with a helmet with chin guard!!! Just call me scar face now. Oh the memories of ski jam! ....and the ride in the ski patrol thing, not fun!
Telleboy 0
Colles (Spelling?) compound fracture of the wrist with a dislocated elbow and my ulna poking out the back of the dislocation, man that hurt, took about 5 months to recover from that one. Ive broken both my arms, wrecked a shoulder and broken many many ribs over the course of about the last 15 years, never broken a leg though, which is a good thing, you can still ski with your arm in a cast but not with your leg in one.Fingers crossed for no injuries this season
nzlegend 1
worst injury to the body was tweaked knee, worst injury to the pride? too many to count, worst injury overall has been to the wallet, poor wallet has taken a heavy beating over the years such is life
brit-gob 9
Nothing real injuries just bruises and tired muscles. Fingers crossed.
Davo 1
Broke or cracked some ribs falling out of a bunk at the beginning of my first 10 day boarding holiday in Japan. Hurt like hell to ride but powder is a great anesthetic. Also twice got deep bruising and close to a break on the shin from hitting trees. Helmets are absolutely essential for tree riding, although it allows me to ride more agressively and probably makes me more likely to kark it in some ways. I'll leave the "showing off" to those [censored] who ride around on scooters/bikes with the helmet just strapped to their necks looks so cool ay
dizzy 0
bump now that season is in full swing, just wanna say ski/ride safely out there i'm back on the slopes this season after sitting out two due to this complicated fracture of the left scaphoid bone (a small one in your wrists). funny thing was i hadn't been doing anything crazy when i fell, it was a fluke... safe trails everyone
bcoasis 0
5 smashed vertebre and a bruised sense of humour.
gamera 0
16-17 years back when I skiied in Goryu, I broke one of my teeth when I fell down on the slope because one of ski pole in my left hand (- if i remember right ) hit it by being brandished like a pendrium. I had to have a false tooth there
sakebomb 0
Landed on my head and damaged my neck quite badly about two years ago. Weekly trips to the chiropractor and a trip to the hospital, which advised me to stop going to the chiro. Xrays showed one of the vertabraes has 'popped out' of place. Always gives me problems but stretching and yoga helps. I just be more careful these days
js 0
Several years ago on the first day of a two week ski holiday to the States, a stupid Yank skier, who was going way too fast for his ability, collided with me from behind - result: three broken ribs and four fractured ones ... man that hurt. (He didn't even get a bruise.) The doctor at the local hospital was very good and I was home without too much trouble - what a crap way to start 'n finish a much anticipated holiday! Been thinking of getting a helmet - any ideas of good ones?
brett_jackson 0
On my 3rd day ever of snowboarding I decided it would be fun to snowboard from the lodge (pension) I was staying at down to the road, jumping off the meter high ledge above the road (since there was so much snow the raod was completely covered). Unfortunately where I thought the ledge was, there were actually stairs. Sank through them, landed hip then shoulder on the snow packed road (the same hip & shoulder that were recovering from being hit by a car on my bike 2 months earlier). Luckily my friend captured it all on camera (d'oh!). Nothing a chiro couldn't fix.
sock_monkey 0
various sprains and bruises all over worst was blown ACL due to a flat landing. i thought it was a sprain and skied almost two full seasons before it was diagnosed by a specialist. I was skiing 5 months after the surgery. dumbest was aggravating a small partial fracture of the 5th metatarsal in my foot into a full fracture with dislocation. my skis got stuck under the snow and i fell forward with all my weight on that leg. binding didn't release so the ankle ligaments and tendons attached to the bone managed to tear the piece right off. dumb because i knew about the partial fracture before hitting the slopes and dumber because I didn't even loosen the DINs. back on skis after two months.
