Go Native 70
There are very few resorts in the whole of Japan that haven't been having a hard time for at least a decade now. I think Japan has more ski areas than does the whole of the US. Obviously all concentrated in a much smaller area and with a much smaller, declining and aging population. A lot of ski areas in Japan will close over the coming decade (and would have regardless of recent events).
muikabochi 208
I would agree, though some may well have that brought on them faster by what has happened.
Jynxx 4
Maybe. I have seen trend sports come and go. Ten-pin bowling for example. I would include golf course and tennis court membership, too. I don´t see it as a big problem if you were someone who would go ski touring... The mountain is still there, just no lifts. Actually, in the future this opens up possibilities. No lifts, no stupid J-pop, no patrol and no crowds but the access by car is there. The ski resorts closures, or "not operating for the next season" is just sign of the times. rider69 18
Road access ski areas would be great but most people would still have to hike from the parking area. Not much money in that.
HeatherLocklearRocks 1
Yeah that would hardly likely to create some great business boom.
rider69 18
Also many ski resorts have private land issues so snowmoblie access of etc is difficult
grungy-gonads 54
Big big business, yes.
rider69 18
ninja snowmoblies now that would be great.
tokabochi 9
Mountain Park Tsunan in Tsunan will be closed "until the end of March 2015" according to the local paper this morning. Hibernation mode, it seems. One of the smaller places. http://www.snowjapan.com/e/resorts/resort_map.php?resortNo=33 Tsunan is right on the border of Niigata-Nagano, next to Sakae village and so I would imagine pretty shook up by the earthquake on 12th March. It's about 20 minutes from where I live in Tokamachi and about 25-30 minutes from Nozawa.
muikabochi 208
They were the guys who did the very original discount days a few years back weren't they? Like discount for gays, or discount for people in fancy dresss etc.....
iiyamadude 6
Photos from Sakae right by the Sakae skijo area. I doubt they will be opening anytime soon either http://www.vill.sakae.nagano.jp/topics/oshirase4.html

muikabochi 208
Good for them! My, they sure got off lightly considering how broken up the road and houses were right close by....
Hitachi 0
Perhaps just rude gossip so large grains of salt needed, but I have heard from more than one person places like Inawashiro might not make it next season.
Metabo Oyaji 71
I'll be doing what I can to support the region next season. Meanwhile, having some Fukushima sake (Okunomatsu, from Nihonmatsu).
@tokyo 14
Alts is only a little bit further out as well isn't it?

ILoveZao 8
That would be big news. Got to feel for them, they're fighting against the word Fukushima.. now known throughout the world. Alts are close to Yamagata border, or Niigata. Perhaps they could apply for a transfer!
fukdane 2
They will certainly be playing down the Fukushima bit, that's for sure.
Metabo Oyaji 71
Might an SJ gathering in Fukushima be in order next season?
