grungy-gonads 54
OK so I was going to post this in the apple tablet thread but thought lots of people might not see it if it is there. So here it is. Anyone on here ever tried this device? http://emobile.jp/pocketwifi/ Seems it basically gives you your own Wifi hotspot out and about and you can connect up to 5 devices to it. Big question is - what's Emobile's cellular network like? Having never heard of them, doesn't sound promising but at the same time a few reviews I have read seem fairly positive. I might guess decent in cities but less so out in sticks.
RobBright 35
I use the DOCOMO version of this. Not a personal wifi spot, as too scared that would lose that module.
grungy-gonads 54
Not following you there Rob. What do you mean? What is the "docomo version of this"?
RobBright 35
DOCOMO also do a similar module modem thingy. Not a wifi spot, but allows you to use a laptop on the move, and also jump on wifi at cafes, Tokyo Metro and Mc Crapnolds.
grungy-gonads 54
Can you tell me the model? I use docomo for internet connection on the move, but it is USB. That would not plug into an ipad, for example.
the snowboarding vicar 1
My friend uses that. He said it is good at home and fast, but coverage is patchy outside of towns certainly not as good as docomo.
klingon 10
Interesting, but not ideal. Runs on batteries.
iiyamadude 6
ipad doesn't like dongles
RobBright 35
Yep, still need to charge it up via a USB port, or that's what the shop guy told me.
thursday 1
so you need to take a regular PC with you to charge it while using your Ipad on Wifi.
grungy-gonads 54
Not ideal is it.
thursday 1
Looks like Softbank will make Ipad fail in Japan.
grungy-gonads 54
I would probably get one if docomo had a shout. But I'm not now. Unless this silly situation changes. Lets hope some android based people can make something equally sexy.
grungy-gonads 54
Is this perhaps a similar thing that uses the docomo network? SKI 15
That says rental for 500 yen a month for flets hikari people. I suppose it would depend on how much they would charge for access outside when you're out and about?
loaf of bread 0
Whatever, this is still another gizmo needed to cart around.
thursday 1
instead of carrying this around, aren't there Wifi hotspots you can use by subscribing to a network?
loaf of bread 0
In the city I'm sure, but out of the city that would be extremely difficult.
nagoid 4
Wireless hotspots in smaller towns are very difficult to find. It would be a very very bad way of relying on being connected.
RobBright 35
McDonalds has them!
nagoid 4
Yeah and as we all know every small town has a Mcdonalds. Click to reveal.. Not.
RobBright 35
Really? Where doesn't have a McDonalds?
muikabochi 208
Imagine that, relying on a network of McDonalds for your internet connection. Yuzawa don't have a McDs now it closed down. What a shame. Muikamachi does though, 2 even. One on Route 17 near the IC and the other in Jusco.
muikabochi 208
Actually Yuzawa might still have one in winter - there used to be one in the Prince at Naeba just in winter. Don't know if it is still there.
