happyhappy 0
I don't mind a bit of fat on meat but sometimes here it is taken to an extreme. Ever had one of those katsudons where the meat/fat ratio is probably something like 10/90. That's no good.
Ctrl-Z 0
Luckily this time of the year with the heat and all I don't often feel like eating big volumes, so I usually lose weight naturally. The flip side to that is in winter I put it on, even if I exercise more.

cheeseman 1
Losing weight is no fun especially for Cheesefans like us all. Moderation in most things, but not in cheese.

HelperElfMissy 42
Quote: Is there anything more miserable than trying to lose weight? Just harking back to the original rhetorical question that began this fun filled thread.... YES there is! This week has been a series of mini-tornado's for me ... After one illness after another, and a nagging and constant pain in my lower right rib area and between my shoulder blades I finally gave up the tough guy act and went and saw the Dr. Probable gall stones she said and sent me off for an ultrasound (which takes days to get in!) Imagine my shock when instead of gall stones they found a 'mass' in my liver and immediately organised a CT scan with contrast dye (yuk - that is not a pleasant experience!). It took almost 2 days to get those results interpreted, and today my good doctor was able to inform me that it is highly likely that the tumor is benign - and while I do need to see a specialist and get an MRI to absolutely rule out malignancy (in bloody August!) she has said I can breathe easy. It certainly put my battle to lose weight into perspective! Meanwhile my feminine coping mechanisms have me massaged, manicured, eyelash tinted and morphing from a blonde to a red head - but hey - whatever gets ya through the day, right?! Savour your food - lifes too freaking short!

rach 1
Must have been a worrying time for you Mamabear. Glad to hear that you can breathe easy. I don't know but recently I seem to be hearing so many stories like that. Not good.
HelperElfMissy 42
@ Y.O.S. you big woose! My poor Dad got a call from my Mum Thursday telling him (it took me a whole day to be brave enough to break the news to my parents) - and then about an hour later a collegue walked in late - he had been at a funeral for his friend Michelle (my name too) who was in her early 40's, who had been diagnosed with a Liver Tumour in January. Dad almost lost the plot - poor old fella did not sleep well on Thursday night. Dad and I are very close. Originally Posted By: Mantas Well, look on the bright side Mama. And as for the pain & discomfort that accompanies it - doc reckons I have to learn to live with it!! So I have made a few changes in my life. Crises have a way of facilitating change dont they? I quit my job. I am searching out a naturopath. And I am devoting my newly found free time half to my family and half to a focus on my health and fitness - so the weight will go - as from now on I am putting myself FIRST! I now have 6 days to get my snowboarding gear organised, tuned and packed and I am off to revel in some fantastic Australian snow. It is indeed a good day
foreversnow 5
Mamabear healing thoughts are being sent your way I sat here crying as I read your thread - As we get older we here these sort of things more and more often. A friend of ours had a sore on his chest that wouldn't heal and he used to just say I must be run down, I'm feeling tired all the time etc. Anyway in January he finally went to the Doctor and 4 weeks later we lost him. No bad news for you though MB it is benign which is AWESOME BUT it makes me more and more aware live every day as if it is the last. ENJOY THE SUNRISE - ENJOY THE SUNSET - LOVE YOUR LIFE AS IF TOMORROW WILL BE YOUR LAST

A healing change It's great to get a new lease on life ! I just got married to someone who is 28 years younger. Snowhuntress, something similar happened to my ex- neighbour. He had lower back pain for a year and the doctor really didn't connect. He went to see someone else at last and was diagnosed spleen cancer. 4 wks later ... Well, We can't grow into old age together but I am loving to be alive. That counts big time for me.
RobBright 35
How about saving money? that's pretty depressing :S
big-will 7
Big week Mamabear! But glad to hear the later parts. Good luck with the "not eating as much at home" thing. I find I eat more when I'm at home and not working.
HelperElfMissy 42
@ RobBright: Saving money? What do you mean? Are you trying to save money and feeling like you are going without? I get quite a kick out of saving money - but I do play little games with it when we are doing it. For example we will decide what the grocery/food/takeaway expenditure HAS been on average over the past few months per week and make that the baseline - and then get that much cash out for the week. At the end of the week the actual cash that is left is visible and tangible and you can put it into a special account or 'cash jar'. I started doing this so the kids could see how little changes can make a big difference and give you the results you want. @big-will: Cheers! Hopefully all will be good with the 'eating at home' - those are usually the best days (more time to be organised) for me - as long as Papabear is not home - he is SUCH a bad influence (and he has a lightening fast metabolism!). RobBright 35
Just in general saving money is kinda depressing - you walk past something and you want to buy it yet you know you don't need it and/or can't afford it because you are supposed to be saving money for the future. Now what that future may be, varies from person to person, but god it sucks.

Sorry Jynxx, just noticed this comment. Thanks for the good thoughts. And yes it is indeed good to have a positive focus on life But the good news is (although I already have certain liver detox things in my regimin - even before this news) my liver function is completely normal. There is no reason, other than my own concern with my health, that I can't drink alcohol. I have been a very well behaved Mamabear in that department until my 40's My plan is to drink socially when I really want to, but not drink (booze that is) at all and take care that the foods I eat and liquids I drink support my liver function the rest of the time. Currently taking Milk Thistle and eating a lot of fresh beetroot (is really quite yum in salads, or roasted.) RobBright If saving money is making you so depressed then you gotta do one of two things; a) Stop it! If spending it makes you happy then just do it. What are you saving it for? If there is a reason - a goal then you wouldnt be so unhappy at the sacrifices you are making. Do a re-work on your psychological/emotional response to saving. Are you saving for a reason? Identify that reason (or make one up!) Get committed to the savings - if you are doing it under sufferance and it is not YOUR choice to save, then yup you are gonna be cranky - and you are probably gonna get resentful of she who wants you to save! Sort out why you are doing it, and if it is going to work for you, and then decide to enjoy the 'savings made' when you pass by something you might otherwise have impulse bought. .co.jp 0
Saving gives peace of mind. But at the same time it can get ridiculous. My parents are still "saving" and every year I ask them --- why??? They have more than enough money to live comfortably and go on big holidays every year and buy pretty much anything they want. Yes they still seem to "save" and live on essentials rather than go out and enjoy. Thats the way I see it anyway, they always come back by saying there's nothing they want. Ideally I would die with very little money having spent it. Of course, not particularly easy to plan that... you could end up doing an MJ!
scouser 4
My parents are similar in a way. They are actually pretty well off, and while they don't restrict their lifestyles as such, they certainly don't go out splashing it all over either. It's their generation I reckon, they didn't grow up with money and so thats just the way they are. As my parents get older us kids are getting used to finishing off a light-hearted moan about them with "well, they're not going to change!"
