Tranmere Rovers put up for sale on eBay

Users logging on to internet auction site eBay found Tranmere Rovers up for sale.

The League One club, based in Birkenhead and existing in the shadow of Liverpool and Everton, was put up for sale by Dornoch Capital, a US firm charged with finding a buyer for the team.

The auction, which invited starting bids of $10 million (about £6m), drew attention to Tranmere's lack of debt and its potential for creating "revenue growth" through sponsorship, television revenues and "upgrading the fan experience".

In the past, pranksters have jokingly listed footballers and their clubs as 'for sale' on eBay, but this time Peter Johnson, the Tranmere chairman, admitted there was no element of spoof.

Johnson was furious that his decision to seek outside investment had been made public in such a bizarre manner. He immediately contacted Dornoch Capital to ask for the eBay listing to be removed.

"We were appalled," Johnson said. "It's totally inappropriate. We immediately e-mailed them and said 'take it off right away'.

"You can imagine how shocked we were to wake up this morning to find out we were on eBay. It's not a second-hand bike we're selling. One has to think of supporters and the ability to run the club."

Tranmere has been up for sale since last season, but Johnson insists he is not so desperate to find a buyer than he would come up with the eBay idea as a publicity stunt.

"Putting it on eBay is not the right way of doing it and we would certainly have not let them if they'd asked us, so we're pretty furious," he said. "If they can find the right buyer then he can takeover at Tranmere but its got to be the right buyer and I don't think putting it on eBay is going to find the right buyer."

Liverpool got no money and its grim stuff. We will sell another one or two, probably alonso or mascherano to pay off the debts of our owners (how exactly did that takeover benefit us again?). Then we will slip to 3 or 4 place this season.

It looks like the Sky Four are all going backwards at different speeds. Maybe Chelsea are getting away with just treading water. If all four can't pull something out the bag, it may open the door to Citeh after all. Villa look cash strapped too and last season proved their squad wasn't big enough to go the distance. However, Everton got fifth with their best striker and best midfielder out for most of the season (and without their Merseyside-based manager moaning about it). All ifs, but they might be more of a force this season too.

Some lovely Bobby quotes:

"We didn't underestimate them. They were a lot better than we though"

"The first 90 minutes are the most important"

"Everyone's got tough games coming up. Manchester United have got Arsenal, Arsenal have got Manchester United and Leeds have got Leeds"

"What can I say about Peter Shilton? Peter Shilton is Peter Shilton and he has been Peter Shilton since the year dot"

"Ray Wilkin's day will come one night"

"They can't be monks - we don't want them to me monks, we want them to be football players because a monk doesn't play football at this level"

"Daft as a brush"

"When he was dribbling, he used to go through a minefield with his arm, a bit like you go through a supermarket"

"Mancester United dropped points, Liverpool dropped points, Chelsea dropped points, Everton dropped points, so in a way we haven't lost anything at all really, although we dropped all three"

"If you're a painter, you don't get rich until you're dead. The same happens with managers. You're never appreciated until you're gone"

RIP Sir Bobby Robson

So long Sir Bobby. He looked like he was on his last legs at that charity match last week. He got a great send off like he deserved. 33,000 chanting his name.
