bentobox 0
Do many of you have bentos much? I like them (actually make them) and find it interesting finding new one in different places.
gamera 0
I like ekiben much more than bentos sold in conbini.
muikabochi 208
Same with most things isn't it that. I have had some good ones. Not too keen on cold spagetti, cold burgers, cold sausages, cold naninani you get often....
gamera 0
Cold calls suck the most
indosnm 0
Bento's are OK but I don't really get the BIG deal with the whole EKI ben craaaaaaaaap. Gimme a freshly made sesame bun filled with saland and some turkey breast any day... (or a meat pie or pastie!) My wife really hates bento day at kindy. I can understand that, Imagine having to cook lunch ; brekkie very day... welcome to hell!
frannyo 2
There's a place near me that does some great bentos. Never had an ekiben, what is supposed to be special there?
bettyx 0
i make a lunchbox everyday. anytime i do it aussie style (sandwich, apple, yoghurt), the kids totally freak out. 'you eat a whole apple? & is that sandwich homemade?!' being vege means i miss out on most of the good stuff in store-bought bentos, saw one in 711 which was part of a new healthy range with all different vege/tofu dishes. didn't buy it, though.. maybe next time. fukdane 2
Sandwiches are particularly difficult to make aren't they? That always gets me too. Fact > most Japanese have never had a decent sandwich.
bettyx 0
i meant to say, 'being vego'. however, still in my pyjamas at 1pm probably makes me a vege, no? & yes, have you tried a conbini sandwich? they put the filling on about 1/3 of the bread, just where you can see it. i swear the rest of the bread is just for holding. slimeypete 0
"Bread" does not seem the right word for what they call bread in those sandwiches.
indosnm 0
It's usually a struggle to get some sanwich with your Mayo or Ham! THe toughest choice for me when at home is wether or not to get the meat pie or that fresh salad roll.....
Karnidge 2
I usually go for both. And so put on a fair bit of weight. It's worth it though.
1 4
My sandwiches are the best. I'm quite famous for them in these parts. A good butty is hardly that difficult to make though is it? Agreed on the combini sandwiches, they do not deserve to be called that.
misorano 1
If anyone is coming to Hakuba then head to the Bakery at A-Coop. The long french bread there is great (best I've had in Japan, even my folks from NZ thought it was something special). Only get the fresh baked stuff, not the commerical loaves on the side. r45 4
He was being sarcastic gamera (well I'm pretty sure). The point it's easy to make a great sandwich, but that seems almost impossible for everyone here in Japan (evidence - general lack of good sandwiches).
sava 0
when i was in japan, I noticed that everybody seemed to cut the crusts off the sandwiches in stores? Was weird and scary.
taguchi 0
Yes they do. Crusts are not popular. I enjoyed the crusts when I was overseas.
sava 0
I was also amazed by the bread, it was the most processed that I have ever seen in my life. Reminded me of fairy floss.
gamera 0
Yeah if sandwiches sold in shops had any crusts, perhaps Japanese people won't buy them much? I don't mind if they have crusts though.
slow 0
My Bagel Sandwich is pretty good. It's very easy. Multi grain bagel from BAGEL AND BAGEL , slow's highly selected ham and cheese, whole-grain mustard, cracked black pepper. yummy, yummy!!
fukdane 2
That does sound good, esp the highly selected ham and cheese Alas, no yummy bagel shops near where I am
