Speed Skiing
marnix replied to SHAG's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Don't know if they do it in Japan, but there is a Japanese guy that went ove 240kmh. He is on the 11th place of the fastest skiers ever. But that was set in 1997. -
Stubai and Hintertux are pretty good. Was in Hintertux in September 2 years ago and we could ski powder. But it is on the glacier so you really have to check before you go. Solden is has very good skiing but you need to take a long toll road to the glacier everyday. France is much further from Munich than Austria. They normally have a great park in Les 2 Alpes. although it takes forever to get on the glacier. Tignes has some steeper runs on the glacier but the glacier is getting nasty. With some luck you might be there to enjoy the first snowfall of the season.

FT had a look at some recent results at Sun Peaks. Doing 143 with speedskiing gear is good. Doing regular production skis and no suit is very impressive. -

In Les Arcs you can take a course. you get the gear etc. According to those guys you should be able to reach 130kmh if you are a decent skier. -

Quote: Originally posted by Toque: That sounds like a nice setup Sanno Are those the original Bigs from a while ago. Real fat and all?? [/QB] These are the original BIGs but they are a lot smaller then they used to be. Just 90 underfoot. Back then a real Big Mountain ski. Now just a regular thing. SerreChe, I live between Hiroo Station and Azabu Juban. On weekdays I am there most of the time. PM me for details. -

SerreChe, If you want you can borrow my old, ugly Dynastar Big (190). They have Fritschi Freeide bindings and I have skins too. I don't think I will use them for a while. -
Types of poles
marnix replied to green's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Currently I ski with bent GS poles, as I got these for free when I broke my last old one's, but somehow I feel better when I have regular straight one's. -
April 9/10 sounds like a good date to me. Tateyama is probably a lot better, but you did this already.

Car vs Train
marnix replied to Phantom Raspberry Blower's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Well if you start to include 30000 to 50000 Yen a month parking and insurance, depreciation there is now way the car will be cheaper then the train, but it will stay more convenient. -
Snowboarding round the world
marnix replied to connackers's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Just read some stories about Pakistan and from years ago Afghanistan. I know a guy who has been to S-Af (it was all man-made and just a few short lifts). But the overland trip Iran - Turkey - Greece - Bulgaria - Slovenia - Austria sounds very good. Maybe toss in Cyprus I'd like to go to Lebanon and Israel but I think I'll wait another few seasons. -
Snowboarding round the world
marnix replied to connackers's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Iran used to have seperate runs. But no everything is mixed except some of the liftlines (So women can just walk through while the men have to wait for 20 minutes).
