  1. I'm glad Henman lost. I hope no native Brit wins Wimbledon ever again. Not because I dislike England, but because it'd be amusing. I hope Mark Philippousis wins; he seems like a cool guy, and I like his game. Butta, if you ever decide you want to become an Australian citizen, just show the authorities your post and you'll do just fine.
  2. I like spanish and italian - they seem to embody a real "go to hell!" atitude. For a really nasty sound - listen to a bitchy chinese grandmother speaking mandarin. its evil personified! learning languages is such a great thing to do. like barok, i also love learning japanese despite the endless frustration it brings. every now and then a phrase will crop up that makes you laugh, eg, "neko ni koban" I had to ask for a translation, but any culture/language that comes up with something like that is pretty cool.
  3. don't you just love living in Japan sometimes? http://metropolis.japantoday.com/tokyo/recent/feature.asp
  4. There was a big write up about this in this weekend's metropolis. To make matters worse, apparantly there is actually enough excess power available from other power stations around the country, but because West Japan uses a 60htz freq and not the 50htz freq used by East Japan, that excess power can't be used. Apparantly the converters that they have can only handle the outpout of one nuclear reactor.
  5. the differences between the two are a bit like the difference between brit movies and those from the states. both have their own charms. what is it with J-rapppers? i can't figure those guys out. they try so hard to look tough but end up looking like a japanese version of ali g. not that aussie "home boys" have much street cred either.
  6. If Nicole Kidman can still have a Hollywood career after BMX Bandits, well, I guess anything is possible.
  7. I agree, Bana was very good in Chopper and I'm not for a moment suggesting that he don't deserve all the success he gets. As I said, good on him. It just seems a little strange, considering his humble origins doing comedy on Aussie TV.
  8. How many other Aussies on here are amazed that Eric Bana has been able to establish himself as successful actor in Hollywood? Good on him, but seriously, Eric Bana?
  9. How do English subtitles for Japanese movies compare? Are they equally dodgie? I remember reading in one of the articles about the stick Natsuko was getting for the LOTR that sometimes it is simply not possible to have subtitles for everything said by the characters. As a result, there is a fair amount of discretion on behalf of the translators... And talking about naff translations, has anyone watched the NHK news whilst listening to the simultaneous English translation? I appreciate that doing simultaneous translating must be extremely difficult, but the information conveyed ne
  10. A very good show. I think my wife already has an order in with amazon, for when 24 x 2 is available. The best thing was Palmer's wife - what a great character - easily the best baddie.
  11. gee that's a good one. Doctors and health clinics throughout Japan; NOT A LOT OF TESTING - SO ****ING IDEA AIDS organisations both in and out of Japan; GEE AN ORGANISATION PROMOTING ITS CAUSE - A VERY RARE THING INDEED Alarming proliference of other STDs in young people; AH, YOUNG FELLA YOU HAVE THE CLAP QED - YOU MUST HAVE AIDS AS WELL. THAT PRESUPOSES A HIGH LEVEL OF INFECTION IN THE FIRST PLACE AND IN ITSELF PROVES NOTHING Relatively low usage of condoms; Behavior of Sex Tours guys -WHO GET HIV/AIDS FROM COUNTRIES THAT DO HAVE VERY HIGH LEVELS EG THAILAND, CAMBODIA AND O
  12. But apparantly no one is doing very much testing! - If they are, the figures are acurate. If the figures come from all and more of the types of places you've listed then why aren't the figures reliable?
  13. A little off topic, but isn't it strange how rather than actually saying or writing an unpleasent word, we do/say things like "the N word", "the F word" or F**k, C*** etc. When we hear or read those things, the offensive word immediately pops into our head, so the effect is exactly the same as if we had actually said the word or written the word out in full etc. All very strange - and yes, I am pretty bored at work this afternoon.
  14. And what accounts are those Karnidge? If testing isn't very common how on earth would anyone know what the levels are or how fast the levels are increasing?
  15. ah, so its not a vaccine then, but a cure(?)
  16. Those are still pretty low numbers. How do they go about testing a vacine for a dealy disease? Or perhaps a better questions where do they find enough people silly enough to agree to take a unproven vacine and allow themselves to be exposed to a disease that will eventually kill?
  17. Just to be clear - Ed Wood, the well known and very bad director, on whose career the movie "Ed Wood" was based, made a lot of movies with Bela Lugosi as the dracula/monster. One part of the Ed Wood movie covered the time when Bela either died during the making of a movie or maybe quit (can't remember) and so they had to get another actor to stand in for him whilst holding a cape over his face so no one could see that it was a different person. so bad its actually quite good SBF - Sleppy Hollow was a half decent Cristina Ricci (sp?) movie not a good Jonny Depp movie - a subtle but i
  18. Even the movie about Ed Wood was pretty dodgie. I wonder if that was on purpose - or just typical Jonny Depp. I would include in the bad movies list most Jonny Depp movies. A lot of "classic" movies are also pretty crappy too. My wife and I watched La Dolca Vita on the week end and couldn't wait for it to end. Also on the list would have to be Breakfast at Tiffany's - talk about over rated!
  19. "I have more small "fears" than superstitions... ie, geting a paper cut on ur eyeball or the big wooden beem above my bed falling and chopping off my head!!" s_f_g/sam - that's just plain crazy. you might have more peace of mind if you were superstitious!
  20. SBF, it was pretty amazing. I went with some friends for a long weekend from London a couple of years ago. The volcanic landscape and almost complete lack of trees gives Iceland a certain austere beauty. Exactly what one would expect from a place at the end of the world. Outside of Reykjavik, the place is virtually desserted and quite peaceful. We went in June so we pretty much had constant daylight which in itself was pretty amazing. It is a bit far to go from Japan, but its one of those places I will definitely return to one day.
  21. I think you're all just a little too geeky for my liking, but what the hell... Many have already been covered, but what about: Blake's Seven Red Dwarf English dubbed manga - Marine Boy Disneyland And for the Aussies - Countdown The Goodies and Dr Who are without doubt the best though. I would really like to see some of the crappy aliens from Dr Who pop up in one of the Star Trek shows. It would be a laugh watching the Daleks or the Cybermen getting the shit kicked out of them.
  22. 1, mate, you need to get out more NZ Aust Fuji England Wales Scotland Ireland East Coast US West Coast US (well, they seemed like different countries) France Italy Sweeden Switzerland Japan Thailand China HK (pre 97) Peru Boliva Argentina Brazil Egypt Singapore ...and my fav - Iceland
