eskimobasecamp 0
beanie - yes but there's a lot of snow up there in winter eh, like a LOT of snow and a LOT of slides right. just know you guys said that ridge line was super narrow the further you go in there. i know you can't take a snowmobile in there, that's why i said - if you know someone willing to take one into national park land..... dizz - i'll find some summer pics 2moro
Fattwins 0
as toque said no snowmobile access it cant make it around the waterfall. the hike in would require a long time and you would be exposed 70% of the time. Hiking up it is not a real option. The line it has issues and as ive said i wont be doing it unless I think its safe. That is to say that I think its safe. before dropping in on that face i would want to do a roped up ski cut with about 40meters or more of rope. Id rather cut the wind effected areas. Camping there are 3 options right at the top of happo beside the lift or you could camp on the plain 30 minutes above happo in the shelter. Last there is a nice spot 1 hour into the hike that would allow for camping. Lastly im commited to try im not commited to do. As Pierre Tardviel said "I pick a line and I wait, sometimes I wait years for it to be right". Thats what im thinking, it might not happen with db in town cause hakuba can get socked in with the best of them. plus if it dumps 100 cms and there is high wind, no freaking way this is not kiddie terrain. We Can hike into great tree lines above Tsugaike and get enough of a rush.
damian 0
Serre – of course there would be build ups lines to get a fell for the situation and a strong propensity to turn back at any stage. Although I would gladly give it a go if the conditions were right, at the moment its all bored office talk for me. Please don’t take that one last thing away from me. I hate being trapped in here, I need to dream… but its getting pretty bloody obvious that I am not producing any work (yet always typing). I agree totally about the terrain traps. The purple line is pretty much the only one that doesn’t lead over a rack of rocks or a cliff in the situation that something goes wrong. Dizzy – I for one wouldn’t go any where near it if temps during the day were reaching +8C on the day of the attempt. But if it went to +8 yesterday then below freezing overnight and stayed that way then I would enjoy the re-frozen solidity of the pack – it would be like spring – the best season. After a re-freeze I would look to tackle it after the top two inches of snow has softened a little by lunch time (depends on the slope aspect). Either way, I agreed with you: the best approach is not to climb it. Eskimofighttramp – in sheer topographical ignorance I was postulating camping at the base of the ridge and then hiking from there in the morning. I have two -18C bags. FT can use one. FT – the chances of it working in the very brief time I pass through town is almost zero. And I agree about not wanting any fresh snowfall at all for a line like that. Besides, we are only talking about this as there was accidentally a picture of it. There are probably loads of better lines available: - easier and safer access - safer descent - better aspect Can someone please post an image from a 25k topo map of the area

damian 0
mate, pretty good, but it covers a way to big area. What scale is it? And what are the contour intervals? 20m? I cant read the marked contour values.

NoFakie 45
Found this among my pics. Taken on June 30. At that height, you don't see much sasa (bamboo grass). The greenery is haimatsu pine bushes.

damian 0
Mr W and Soub - thankyou for the photo and map link respectively. Very helpful. Beanie - I never doubted you.
tsondaboy 0
It is a 1:25000 topo map of the area above happo lifts. It is not very detailed because I have zoomed out of the picture a lot in order to fit it on a A4 page. The map comes from a collage of the maps that you can find through Soubriquets link. By the way soub, the maps at that link are 1:25000 scale.

ianbc 0
not sure if this is the most desirable ive seen but it's pretty high up there....a pic I took last winter. D went skiers right off the cliff into the pocket... I would like to go left down the spine.
ianbc 0
here a better view of this zone on return to this zone, when everyone was claiming the spine, we were digging a pit and the whole face went from the summit about arm pit deep. in the bottom left corner theres a lake and the snow rumbled all the way down to it, eye opening day. morganwindsor 0
Sorry to get back to the "living life to the fullest thread" but speaking of same thought you guys might like this from the Bard of the new millrenium- Rag doll any thoughts? THE CROCODILES ARE CRYING Endless visions fill my head – this man – as large as life And instantly my heart mourns for his angels and his wife Because the way I see Steve Irwin – just put everything aside It comes back to his family – it comes back to his pride His animals inclusive – Crikey – light the place with love! Shine his star with everything he fought to rise above The crazy-man of Khaki from the day he left the pouch Living out his dream and in that classic ‘Stevo’ crouch Exploding forth with character and redefining cheek It’s one thing to be honoured as a champion unique It’s one thing to have microphones and spotlight cameras shoved It’s another to be taken in and genuinely loved But that was where he had it right – I guess he always knew From his fathers’ modest reptile park and then Australia Zoo We cringed at times and shook our heads – but true to natures call There was something very Irwin in the make up of us all Yes the more I care to think of it – the more he had it right If you’re going to make a difference – make it big and make it bright! Yes - he was a lunatic! Yes - he went head first! But he made the world feel happy with his energetic burst A world so large and loyal that it’s hard to comprehend I doubt we truly count the warmth until life meets an end To count it now I say a prayer with words of inspiration May the spotlight shine forever on his dream for conservation …My daughter broke the news to me – my six year old in tears It was like she’d just turned old enough to show her honest fears I tried to make some sense of it but whilst her Dad was trying His little girl explained it best…she said “The crocodiles are crying” Their best mate’s up in heaven now – the crocs up there are smiling! And as sure as flowers, poems and cards and memories are piling As sure as we’ll continue with the trademarks of his spiel Of all the tributes worthy – he was rough…but he was real As sure as ‘Crikey!’ fills the sky I think we’ll miss ya Steve…goodbye RUPERT McCALL 2006
