muikabochi 208
Haha thanks. I don't think I'd ever tire of it there. snowboard, A decent camera, good lenses, stunning scenery and good weather is all a very big help! I have only just recently found out that RAW is my friend as well, and enjoying learning about that.

Saitaman 1
Can someone tell me about how long it takes to drive into Yamagata from Zao Onsen? You guys have sold this place on me big time.
muikabochi 208
That would be about 25 minutes to the centre of the city. Not been 'selling' but glad that you like the look of the place.
brit-gob 9
By car, right? I presume an official bus or whatever would take longer than that...
muikabochi 208
Well yes I would say so. I wasn't crawling along so I suppose that is the fastest possible.
norcal 5
Is the expressway up there ok for regular tires? I'm coming up this weekend in my CRV & have chains, but don't want to put them on unless I have too. (I'm sure I might need them OFF of the expressway)
muikabochi 208
I would think it would be ok - the lower areas get much less snow. But I would be surprised if there was any snow on the road anyway down there.
Metabo Oyaji 71
On the Yamagata Expressway to Zao, you will drive past St. Mary ski area in Miyagi -- actually right through it, with the slopes crossing above and below the expressway -- so the weather forecast for this ski area should give an idea of what you will be driving through. Right now light snow being predicted for Thursday and Friday: http://www.snowjapan.com/e/resorts/resortdetail.php?resid=
