Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd.’s top Japan executive was found alive and conscious after spending the night in the snow at a ski resort in Niigata prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, a police official said.

Japan Chief Executive Officer Robert Bell, 39, was located around midday in a valley about 50 meters (160 feet) beyond a course boundary at the Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort, the official said by phone on condition of anonymity, citing policy. Bell dug a hole for shelter and escaped serious injury, the person said.

The executive was reported missing by the resort yesterday after he failed to return from a solo snowboarding trip. Police and rescue workers had earlier postponed a search this morning because of the risk of an avalanche after heavy snow, an official from Minami-Uonuma police station said.

“It was snowing yesterday and visibility was poor,†said Narihiro Kanda, general manager at Gala Yuzawa. “We repeatedly alerted skiers with announcements in four languages that they should be careful and shouldn’t go beyond the courses.â€

Gala, a group company of East Japan Railway Co., was operating all its ski lifts yesterday and today, Kanda said.
