Xenomorph 0
Why was the South area closed so long anyway?
Tubby Beaver 209
something to do with the earhquake they had in that region a few years ago, did some damage to the land....dunno for sure
muikabochi 208
The quake was 6 years ago and they did not open that area that season until now. I heard there were problems with the ground over there and the lift which is quite steep, and also the ropeway connecting Gala with Yuzawa Kogen. Does seem to have taken a long long time though, perhaps it was a money thing delaying it (?)
sutebun 0
Gala looks pretty sweet....I'll have to get up there this season!!
SKI 15
Rememeber - weekdays!
linalmeemow 0
I used to go up there pretty much every week in 2003/4/5 and the south area was definitely best. For some reason it was always deserted and there was powder to be had almost all day. I'm sure there only used to be one lift up from the top of the gondola to the midpoint of the mountain - looks like there's another one now too...
muikabochi 208
There are no new lifts, linalmeemow.
linalmeemow 0
Well, it's been a few years since I was last there so I may very well be mistaken, but didn't there only used to be the "Sociable" lift? That new course map has a lift called "Barouche" too...
muikabochi 208
Both of those quads have always been there since I have been there which is quite a few years back (double digits!) They don't always have both of them operating on weekdays.
SKI 15
Gala with only 1 main quad would be an absolute nightmare on holidays. I think the resort started with those two.
gnarly-dude 1
Looking forward to checking out that souther area. Never been but heard that it was really good and easy the best bit of Gala.
BillTheBinMan 0
Bet it will be mad busy holidays this season
muikabochi 208
Word has it Gala nearly ready with their new course. They have been testing the lights going down the mountainside, I suppose they will be necessary every day until spring. Seems they have scrapped their "half nighta" that they had on Saturdays before and are closing at the same time each day this season.
Xenomorph 0
Interesting. So have they had to rebuild the lift over there?
muikabochi 208
Don't know any of the details of what went on over there. The lift is the same as it was before though from what I can tell.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan#Andrew 6 Posted December 18, 2010 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted December 18, 2010 Sorry I missed this.... actually Gala have changed the lift in the South Area. The old one was a quad, the new one is a pair lift. 'A fast one', I was told today. Hope so!
muikabochi 208
Interesting. I suppose it is quite short and I can't remember queueing much there. But I would guess it is busy on a weekend, that is the only lift in that section of the resort.
pie-eater 207
Wonder what happens to a lift when it dies. Gets shipped off somewhere else?
