JuniorStubbs 0
Does anyone know what the opening dates for the various major resorts are this season?
tsondaboy 0
22 of November for kagura
RobBright 35
no way?! might have to pop up on the 24th then.
SnowJapan Admin SnowJapan 178 Posted October 16, 2008 SnowJapan Admin Share Posted October 16, 2008 Usually just the top bit at Kagura, of course depends on how much snow there is. Many resorts around the Yuzawa town area (and lots of other places actually) try to open mid-late December. There have been times when it's Chritsmas/New Year before they can properly get going. Lets hope there's early snow this year.
muikabochi 208
Very hit and miss at Kagura when it opens. Fingers crossed. Naeba is also planning the same date 22nd Nov but that will almost certainly be the thin artificial snow course.
sanjo 2
I bet a big % of Japanese resorts open 2nd half of December.
tsondaboy 0
Kagura opening day 23 of November last year 2 seasons ago only the top bit of the mountain in the above pic was open and that with fake snow.
Mike Pow 52
Apparently Friday 21 November for Grand Hirafu, Niseko.
JuniorStubbs 0
My boss has said to me that the opening day for Niseko Village will be the 20th if snow conditions allow.
thursday 1
Not many overseasers would risk that early though.
-30deg 0
Furano's opening will be 22 November.
Tubby Beaver 209
Early season must be great for the locals up in the big resorts, as Thurs said, very few oversea tourists willing to risk dodgy conditions, the slopes must be pretty empty up until Xmas
RobBright 35
Tsondaboy - you've just put a HUGE smile on my face with that pic.
torihada 2
On my biannual visit to northern Tohuku: 4 seasons ago (first snow trip) no snow for first 4 days and local ski-jo closed (until approx 25 Dec) Then it snowed for 3 weeks. 2 seasons ago. Noooo snow until about New Year and very warm. Boarding on gravel at one point. Local ski-jo stayed shut for duration of trip. Did get some fresh falls in first week of Jan at Appi. This season? Hopefully 3rd time lucky.Or I'm jinxed and every two years I bring warm wet weather.
muikabochi 208
Last year was a good start at Kagura.

If so then why don't yo try somewhere else?
torihada 2
Its where the in-laws live. I did get to visit Kagura for some BC for two days when visiting other 'southern' relatives in Gunma. I only started snowboarding (four years ago) as it was something to do when visiting snowbound Akita. Its only 15 mins drive to a small ski-jo from father-in-law's house. Its tame, but very quiet and you can board from 9am - 9 pm. Great for the kids. We're close to Tazawako, and are spending 4 days at Appi. Having a car lets us visit numerous hills in Akita/Yamagata/Iwate.
Tubby Beaver 209
Ah ok, cool. I'm jealous actually as I live in Southern Kanagawa, well away from the snow. Although its only a bus journey away, I'd love to live close enough to nip off to the slopes anytime I wanted with no hassle.

RobBright 35
JR View Plaza in Ofuna were putting out the brochures yesterday for the new seasons - ran across the station, smiling and the lady who was putting them out simply said ’楽ã—ã¿ã’ - made her and me laugh. Ah that first day excitement - can feel it coming!
Tubby Beaver 209
Really? i had a look in Fujisawa but they weren't out yet. I check everyday though so maybe today they will be there.
Molochan 0
You check every day?! Is it so exciting? I suppose it is fun and also looking forward.
Tubby Beaver 209
I walk past the stand in the station so its not exactly taxing to turn my head round for a few seconds and look at the stand as I walk past.
