Do Japanese guide books still advise you stick money under the pillow as a tip?

I see, you'd think they might "add it on" if you go close to the date, say within a month or so. Oh well.

OK so in 2 months my re-entry permit is up for renewal. But I will be going out of the country before then and coming back 4 days before it is up. Question is whether to go get it before or wait. If I get it now, will I basically forfeit that 2 months period or will they extend it from the existing date? Anyone know?

Sort of off-topic, but I would recommend going up there in autumn when all the colors are peaking. Beautiful it is and a road right down from the top to the village, where you can take an onsen.
