Powder boards in Niseko
greg replied to jondreads's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
For powder boards the old saying rings true, you can't beat length! (lets stick to snowboards people). I have a few boards, but love to crack out the 172cm. When it is really deep but late in the day and the areas are tracked out it is like the USS Enterprise. You can go where no man has gone before. -
Buying my first board?

Hi mate, as another Perthite I understand your pain, I have been through so many boots and dollars trying to get the right fit. If you can find the right boots for you in Perth (Mainpeak Osborne Park) then buy them or layby. Don't buy a pair of boots without trying them on and wearing them for at least 10 -15 minutes and longer if you can. If you decide to buy a pair over the net of the same model you tried on in Perth, make sure they are the same year/model. I have 2 pairs of Burton Drivers from two different years that fit differently. Boards are important but if you are cold wet and mis -

There are a few hire stores in Hirafu now that you can hire a powder board from. From memory you could hire a Burton fish, malalo, 4807. As ippy said you could also try a gentenstick for something local, there a quite a few models depending on your size and weight. I really like them but everyone is different. Sometimes there has been a small hire shop up on the mountain under one of the cafe's that rents gentems. Or your could just straight to the Gentemstick showroom/workshop/shop right next to the Gentem Cafe, about 15 minutes walk? from the village towards St Moritz. -
I think everyone has usmmed it up pretty well. It's a gamble. It may be average or it may be huge. Either way as GN says there will be heaps of sasa around and most back country won't be open even if it snows heaps. One plus is if it is a big start to the season you wont have to share it with as many people:)

It's good to use examples like that as it can put things in perspective, using that example however, how much of that 1km did CFC's make up in the 1990's? .005mm? No one will argue the impact of the little bit of gas from air conditioners and fridges had on the atmosphere. I do believe however the ETS is the wrong way to go for Australia. -

To no one imparticular... 1. Fact....The Earth is currently going through a period of global warming. 2. a large fraction of news/media is privately owned. Their role is to make money, whether or not that is through informing the public impartially on current events is to a large degree irrelevant to the business model. 3. The debate is whether or not it is caused by human activity, most people who disagree do so because they can't be bothered having the discussion. It seems to be cool at the moment to disbelieve in climate change at the moment, yet when you try to engage these pe -

Seemore, check the large banks, and find the best rate. The best bit of advide I can give to a West Aussie is book your YEN soon. There is a very good chance the banks will not have enough on stock when you need it. -
Snow in Japan 2009/2010
greg replied to skichef's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
If you want to know what the real deal is with respect to the snow fall and depths this is the place. I must admit I also like the MikePows snow updates. You can't argue with someone who is commenting on the snow depth out the front of his house. Just stating the facts. There are good times to be had on the mountain, even without 3 foot of fresh stuff....and it is OK to say so... -

I love Niseko and have been coming back for many years and hopefully will for many to come. I have met some great people, been exposed to a wonderful local culture, seen the place change over the last ten years and had the best snowboarding experiences of my life. Both my wife and son have learnt to board at Niseko. It appears to difficult however to discuss certain topics. Below are some of my observations from my experience going to Niseko only. - It can tribal/clicky. -It is not always great snow despite the hype in publications. Nisko has some shite days/weeks...so what -Nis -

Saw them in concert about ten years ago. One of the best times I had at a concert. Funny guys, lots of interaction with the audience. Just good fun, nothing serious. -

Who cares what it's called. You bought it to use it. No ones rebranding anything. The term is used loosley to refer to a property that you can use aswell as rent. If you wnat sound bankable returns buy somewhere else. If you have a holiday home and don't rent it. Try negative gearing it.
