  1. The whole event was totally inspiring. I saw the marathon last night (didn't realise they did one in the Para-olympics) ... imagine pushing a wheel-chair 40+kilometres to win the marathon!! What role-models these people are!!
  2. Seems to me there's a missing opportunity for cig companies - if they can create a menthol cig, then the next logical step is to create a cig with an alcohol content and desired taste e.g. tia maria cigs for old gals, tooheys cigs for bogans, Rum or whisky cigs for oldies (like Soubs!), Jaegermeister cigs for chicks (leg openers!), etc. It would also allow cross advertisement: never seen a Toohey's drinker without a pack of Malboro reds tucked in his sleeve! The obvious effect is that we don't have to put up with smokers in pubs and clubs. (The term 'smoking a Fag' has all sorts
  3. I disagree with the 'legalise' debate for only one reason - motoring. Being under the influence of alcohol is easily pick-up, however, detecting the myriad of other substances is not so easy. Would those supporting legalisation be so enthusiastic if their child were killed by a driver under the influence? That's why, in most cities in the western world, Friday and Saturday nights are the most dangerous to be on or near a road: 20-somethings high on weed, GHB, MDMA, etc and doing the party/club scene.
  4. With reference to all the posts above, where the bloke gets screwed-over 100% of the time, it seems your friend should sell up, put all the bank account money into an overseas account, and move to Spain/France. The wife can spend her time and money chasing him. As for the kids - tough call, but what do you do? Spend the remainder of your life trying to regain financial freedom, or make an each-way bet that the kids will accept the choice made once they're old enough to comprehend the situation?
  5. Also obvious is the absence of the UN - AGAIN! Sometime after the Korean War, the UN lost all it's usefulness.

It's likely due to the absence of estuaries that limit WA's fish species/'quality'. (Personally, reef fish are terrible to eat) My family has a history as fishermen, two points, NEVER buy fillets because you get stale fish that wasn't previously sold; and, alway check
  7. Many things said in jest, are true?
  8. I prefer neither: One is old and likely to be a puppet like Reagan, whilst the other (looking past all the shiny teeth and Kennedy-like gestures) has uncomfortable links to Islam. Having a dodgy background (linked to Indonesia) is not the type of person I'd consider appropriate to have the finger on 'the button'. They would've been safer with Clinton - experienced beyond all the others.

A home baked chook, cleaned properly, with homemade stuffing is nothing like a shop purchased one. Tip: use an oven bag to save cleaning the oven and keep the moisture in. As for boiling
  10. A mate just recently go a photovoltaic system, here are his thoughts: 1. no use getting one unless you also have full solar water heating, and gas cooking. 2. it won't pay for itself quickly if you have kids. Also consider the inverter is usually good for about 10 years - it costs $3,000! 3. Make sure the inverter is a reputable make e.g. made in Germany, because there are lots of cheapies flooding the market from China, etc. 4. Change light bulbs to compact fluro's 5. Electricity production varies according to temperature. Optimum production is at 25C, over or under this ambient

Back-on-topic: traditional tats like those the Maori use are good, similar ones on white-fellas look dumb.
  12. It always amazes me too - seeing people who cry poor, yet they have a pack of cigs, buy a case of beer once a week, keep a car, and a mobile phone, BUT, can't afford to dress and feed their kids in an appropriate manner. Unemployment benefits should be a ration card system - NOT money! Mamabear, PLEASE don't use the term 'motherland', yikes!
  13. Commercially made brawn ... WTF is that? Triple YUK! We make the home-made stuff: take one pigs head, clean it (remove brain, eyes and hair) then boil it, meanwhile cook some shin beef, and cut up lots of parsley. Drain pigs head, remove meat and cut into small cubes, likewise with shin beef. Mix in parsley and salt/pepper - can add onions/garlic/tomatoes, but it reduces the shelf life of the finished product. Put in a bowl, place a weight on top and refrigerate (the natural gelatin cements the mass together). When cold, slice it and eat with home-made chutney (savoury
  14. At home have an old DELL which is now EIGHT years old (Window 98SE) - burnt out one HDD in that time (so far!). Stripped it back to a glorified Word Processor, etc. Can burn CD's and watch DVD's on it because it was top-of-the-range back then. What's the lesson? Buy the best machine you can afford with all the techy gismo capabilities and it will last you a long while. At work we have very high end 'puters, printers/plotters and scanners, do some home-related (foreign orders!) on them, burn to memory stick and take home for further work, hence, no need to upgrade home PC for a w
  15. Food must be expensive in the Western State, Mama! Over here on the East you'd get the same for $25! One thing though, in Oz (and some other countries that don't use tipping) the wages of staff includes uniforms, annual/long service leave entitlements, sick leave provisions, etc. In short, the US strategy of mandatory tipping is the extension of a Class system - keeping the plebs as plebs. It's demeaning and is not productive for the economy e.g. try getting a bank load when a large proportion of your income is based on a rubbery tipping percentage ... great for a consumer-based soci
  16. Other than low air pressure, it's probably out of balance and alignment = take it to a dealership, etc and get it fixed. To check this AFTER properly inflating it - get the car up to a speed of say 100km/hr, if the steering wheel shudders, then it's likely to be balancing/alignment.
  17. Remember 38mm film canisters? Use one of them. Or even an old screw top pill bottle (plastic). A no-brainer really.
  18. Can also save to CD or DVD using WINZIP - which means it is easier to load onto the new computer.
  19. 1. A Death Star 2. A chalet on the Planet Hoth - all snow covered 3. Immortality Number four would be a 'Mini-me' (just for the heck of it!)
  20. Just wait for Aldi's to bring out a Chinese rip-off player that plays all CD's/MP3's/DVD's/HDD's!
  21. Ditto BP, all the major centres have all the facilities anyone needs. From Hospitals to swimming pools, lots of sports clubs (naturally), etc. Comparing it to Japan or the UK is unfair for many reasons, but I reckon (pound for pound) we compete above our weight. For example, based on the Human Development Index (HDI) we're ranked as number three (1 = Iceland 2 = Norway). And according to the World Bank, we're classified as a 'high income' country. There are significant climate and social differences between our State capitals though - which is a result of geographical isolation
  22. Welcome aboard ANCOT! Orange Pekoe, green/jasmin, irish breakfast please!
  23. If you're in IT and like the snow, and being a pom preference the cool (cool in Oz is 28 Celsius or below) then I suggest you go to Melbourne or Tasmania (Tassie has lousy snowfields so you'd have to fly to Melbourne anyway). If in cosmopolitan Melbourne, then Adelaide is only several hours drive away = some of the best wine regions in the country = great idea for a long-weekend trip. Reminds me of a bumper sticker: Thinking of Emmigrating To Australia? F*ck-off, we're full! ... a skilled pommie?? That's a rare one!
  24. '...making some extra money on the side while telling her husband she worked at a store in a nearby town.' Maybe he mis-heard her. What she actually said to him was: 'telling her husband she was working as a whore in a nearby town.'?
