Anyone recommend a good recent book about Japanese society. I remember enjoying The Japanese Mind a long while back, but wondering if there are any good new ones that anyone has read recently.

I am determined to lie back, chill out and at least try to enjoy it as much as possible. But flying for me is a big hassle and I just don't like it. I'm always very glad to get off the plane safe.

I actually thought Rising Sun was quite entertaining - possibly because it was so bad! Black Rain with Michael Douglas was the same kind of thing. Weren't there some Japanese business baddies in Disclosure too? might be mixing that up with something else there. Japan does seem to pop up quite a bit, even if it is just a reference (and usually a very stereotypical one). Congrate to James on his first at Cambridge though! Trying to think of some more examples...

For the most part I don't think that is the case. It seems that to an extent Arai attracts a lot of a certain type of people to it's ski lifts, but is supplying a rather different market with the hotels and restaurants they have there - leaving many of the snowboarders and skiers without much appealing options. If Arai was going for the upmarket consistently then it would be a different matter, but it isn't.
