  1. Mikazooki, i'm not familiar with the problems of the west coast of America from 1996, but as i understand it, Tepco are able to shut down parts of the grid, in order to maintain supply to the most needy (read city) areas. The problem they have is that on really hot days sudden demand spikes in the city, which may only last 15 minutes, could shut down the grid. Its planning for these major spikes that is the problem. Its actually very interesting to look at an electricty demand graph and see it dip in the morning when everyone turns the lights off at home and heads for work. Then you have
  2. I never cease to be amazed by the number of people i see out together on what appear to be dates, with neither talking to each other, just eating and fiddling with their phones. I guess it makes relationships easier....not as likely to be arguing all the time!
  3. I don't think you need to panic people. Without giving too much away, my work is in the "energy" industry. Based on our best estimates the power is unlikely to go off in Tokyo this year. It is quite likely another couple of nuclear units will come back in Fukushima prefecture during July which will add to current capacity. Tepco has also restarted a host of old oil fired stations which will soak up some additional summer demand. And while the converter issue is a definite problem, Tepco are still able to bring in power from Hokkaido EPC, Tohoku EPC and Hokuriku EPC, who all operate on the
  4. I have to agree with the earlier reviews. Saw it at Roppongi Hills and while i agree with Danz that the seats are uncomfortable, it was compounded by the boring movie i was watching. Seriously, i loved the first. But this was crap. Talk about take a good thing and do it to death. The scene where he fights the Smiths would have to go down as one of the most boring fight scenes ever filmed. The last 30 minutes was fantastic, when the story line took over as the main attraction. May be a bit harsh but its a natural reaction to the high expectations i had.
  5. I'm generally positive....if the govt would just put the money into the banking system that it uses to build bridges to nowhere then we might just be able to balance things out....
  6. Don't get too excited. If the poison worked it means you've got a rotting rat somewhere in your house.....
  7. You are one lucky ba$tard for living in Seattle during that period. I never completely immersed myself in grunge, however there was no denying the brilliance of the likes of Soundgarden and the Trees.... Lanegan's voice....damn, what i would do to be able to sing like that! Do you know of buffalo tom as well? My all time fave music memory is hiring a car with my mate in the states and driving all day and all night through the "blizzards of 96" to get to a show at Amherst College in Massachussets (sp?) because the arvo before we'd checked in at an internet cafe and seen they were playing a
  8. I could talk about this stuff forever. Another fave....Spiderbait closing out the first Homebake festival in Sydney. Awesome. Anyone remember their song "Sam Gribbles"....that has to be the best crowd starter around!!!
  9. My memory is not good enough to rattle them all off but all time fave would have to be Buffalo Tom who i've prob seen about half a dozen times by now. Those boys got me through Uni and still rate them as my fave to this day. The times i've seen REM in concert they sucked. I would rate their Automatic tour in Sydney as the worst live show i've ever seen. Michael Stipe used a lectern and basically read the lyrics all night. Very lame effort. Enderzero...what were the Screaming Trees like....they were another of my faves but never remember them coming to Oz. Gees i loved watching the bi
  10. I used to have one that ran around my room in Bondi while i was asleep at night. Never bothered me too much till it started eating my food.....that's going too far! Cheese in the trap....doesn't work. Mice don't eat cheese...its a fallacy. I finally caught him with a bit of chocolate in the trap. The wire arm went straight through his neck and broke him in half....not pretty! Let us know how you go!
  11. TheOrange....nice to see someone trying to manage their weight by increasing the amount of calories they burn rather than just restricting what goes in their mouth. Good luck with it. I know the Atkins Diet is very popular at the moment but my advice is stay well clear of it. Yes you can lose a lot of weight, but my experience is that it negatively affects your lifestyle through lack of energy and general tiredness. Eat sensibly, exercise and you'll be fine. PS: As Slow suggests, watching your body fat percentage is a much better indication of your overall health than simply we
  12. Slow......no disrespect to what others have posted here, but its really very simple. Your ability to lose weight is a simple function of calories in versus calories out. It doesn't matter if you get your calories from eating carbs, fat, protein or used car tyres. So long as the amount of calories you burn is HIGHER than the amount you put in your mouth, then you will lose weight and reduce your body fat percentage. If your really serious you can buy yourself a Nutrition Almanac and add up the total calories of all the foods you eat during the day. If you take your training program to any
  13. Looking for VPL is a fun game i have even got my fiance playing with me now. Rather than having to check it all out on the sly i have educated her on the do's and don't's of VPL and now we play together. I highly recommend it. By the way, she had no idea that people took any notice till i explained it to her so perhaps most J babes simply don't realise???
  14. If you haven't yet seen a movie called "Wag the dog" with Dustin Hoffman and Robert Deniro then do yourself a favour. It could very well have been written to describe this whole episode.
  15. Unfortunately have't caught much of it this season due to some strange quirk in the Pay TV system that means i can get Sky 1 and 2 where i live but not 3. Guess which one shows the Super 12!!! That said the NZ teams were all pretty impressive this year from what i saw at the pub....ominous sign in the lead up to the World Cup. OUFREESKI2, Do you think the Brumbies can get up, realistically speaking?
  16. Yuki's Passion...regarding Michener, you should try and find "The Drifters". That still rates as one of my all time faves. And on Murakami, i read one of his books, and i know i'm going to stuff up the title here, but i think it was something like "South of the border, west of the sun"?????? To be honest i wasn't all that impressed....found it a bit hollow. I think i recommended Irvine Welsch (sp?)'s Glue in another thread. More of a blokes book but one of those rare books that when you finish you don't feel like reading again for a while lest you spoil the memory. The Shipping
  17. Of course there was the Honorable Dick Face, member of the lower house in NSW for 20 odd years and representative for where i grew up.
  18. Was about 1am wasn't it? Felt like i was rolling round on a waterbed for a second or two then disappeared. A few little tremors afterwards as well. Any damage reported?
  19. What then.... a dab hand with the vacuum? quicker with tips on how to get the red wine off your new white shirt? a better appreciation of the rules of netball?
  20. Enderzero said it best for me. It is inexcusable for just one innocent person to die. And for that reason there should be no death penalty. Put aside the rhetoric for a moment and just sit back and quietly imagine what it would feel like, the frustration, the despair, of knowing that you were to be killed by the state for no reason. Incomprehensible.
  21. What's the first reason....have to be better cooking wouldn't it? I understand your point re searching for global relevance. I'm a big sports fan myself but in recent times even i've come to question the amount of financial capital we're investing in global sporting success as opposed to hospitals, education etc. I think you're referring more to the investment of emotional capital but its an interesting point.
  22. Db, you're off on a tangent. You said "Australia's obsession with sport as a cultural replacement". That's textbook, Oxford dictionary cringe material. Sport is culture. Opera is culture. They don't need to be evaluated.
  23. Australia's cultural inferiority complex - aka the cultural cringe. Can't stand listening to people who want to beat themselves up over the fact that Aussies in general prefer sports to a night at the Opera as if that somehow equates to cultural inferiority.
  24. What cracks me up with the drama is the way they only produce a set number of shows, which seems to be decided beforehand. Take the recently finished "Good Luck" for example. It was the top rating show on TV for about 3 months and then they just say - "That's it - that's all we planned to make and there's no more" Think of the advertising revenue thrown down the drain!!! Can you imagine the producers of "Friends" after the first series, when it was taking off, saying "no that's about enough - we just wanted to make one series - we realise its exceptionally popular and we're throwing
