  1. X-Jam resort near Ryuo and Shiga Kogen is a smaller resort, but it has a big park and 2 pipes. Well cut and maintained from what I hear.
  2. Gotcha. Will probably just end up staying in Hakuba village and driving up to Otari each morning.
  3. Not so dangerous.....unless you shoot out of the exit straight into the road!
  4. yeah Ippy, basically all the reviews I have read describe this piece of equipment as being for kids. OK for a victim, but pretty much lame for searching. I have already asked him to look into getting a 3 antenna transceiver, but get the feeling that he won't stretch to it. The best we can do if he doesn't get a new beacon, is to take him out on one of our early season practice sessions and see how he and his 1 antenna transceiver perform. If he can't make the grade then I guess he can't play with us until he gets the right gear....
  5. So this season we will likely have a new member in our ride group. All current members in our group use the 'Tracker2' digital 3 antenna transceiver. We are all very familiar with this transceiver and on how to use it. The new member to our group has a 1 antenna digital transceiver, which has an elliptical receiving range of up to 40 m. http://www.pieps.com/en/avalanche-transceivers/pieps-freeride Now the range isn't great, but not so much less than the Tracker2 I guess. As it has only 1 antenna, I guess the 'search' approach to the signal would be an elliptical, semi-circula
  6. For Niseko I would go clear lenses for the night riding, and persimmon for the daytime. Even if the sun does make a rare appearance, the persimmon lense works fine up to (but not including) bluebird and bright sunshine. It would probably also work for well lit night courses too, but I would try to get a clear lense for that if possible. The Oakley Crowbar or Splice have various colourways with the persimmon lense. Perfect for Niseko
  7. I had the big 3 'Premium Pass' for a couple of seasons (08/09 and 09/10) which was a super good pass. You can get up to a 3 day pass at any of the 3 resorts every time you use a ticket from the booklet. It is expensive but you definitely get a lot. Shiga season pass alone is 65,000! Last season I got the JTB pass and will do the same this year. Cortina only pass at 25,000 (early bird price) is very good if you spend a lot of time there, but the JTB gives you the onsen ticket with each visit . Also Tsugaike and Kashi stay open longer, and I managed to score some sick late season powder at
  8. Loveland pass is not a resort, but a road with lots of sharp cut back turns up above Arapaho Basin. Summit County locals drive up there every full moon in the season for night lineal. It is awesome! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loveland_Pass
  9. I've done some epic midnight full moon runs at Loveland Pass in Colorado. A few friends, a few beers, a few cars for the taxi run between the entrance and exit of the run.......Ahhh happy memories
  10. If you snowboard and want a helmet camera, then I would go for a Contour. For skiers the GoPro3 Black Edition looks sweet!
  11. There used to be a really good one right at the bottom of Happo until about 2005 or so.... Lit up at night too!
  12. Thanks for the tips. Yeah I know a bunch of places down in Hakuba village, but was looking for something a little closer to Otari. Petit Hotel Shanze looks pretty decent.
  13. I have a guest coming to stay with me for a while this winter and want to take him riding around Hakuba/Otari for a few days. I am looking for any suggestions or recommendations for simple, minimalistic accomodation in the area. I will be taking him to Cortina and Tsugaike mainly, and looking to stay somewhere for maybe 3 nights without breaking the bank! Any help would be greatly appreciated. NECK.
  14. I am 68% sure that winter is on it's way very soon. This statement has 70-75% accuracy at this point.
  15. Nice video. I like the `looking back` footage. Are you using a GoPro or a Contour? Shame about your shell though
  16. This morning there was snow up on some of the Hakuba peaks. Should be more in the mail for tonight
  17. So the JTB multi resort pass is available to buy now. It seems to have 2 extra resorts added from last season. Last season I bought this pass and continued using it at Tsugaike and Kashimayari well into April, maybe even until May. It is a great pass for sure and I am 90% sure I will get it again this season. On the JTB website, it seems to say that the pass can only be used until March 31st. Does this mean that the pass expires earlier than it did last season? I called the JTB staff and asked them about this (in my limited Japanese), and the old guy on the line seemed to think that it
  18. Dusted mine off yesterday, but not using them just yet.....Although it was only 8 degrees when I left my house this morning!
  19. The rental shops only tend to do the whole package, including boots and often jacket/pants. My dad is bringing his boots because he has oddly shaped feet and it is very difficult to get boots that fit him properly. When he was here last time he couldn't rent just the skis in Shiga. We rented the whole set, but the staff refused to set the bindings to his boots and would only set them up to the rental boots which he wasn't going to use..... It was a bit of a nightmare to be honest!
  20. My pops is coming to stay with me for a couple of weeks from the middle of March. He is keen to get out to ski for a couple of days, but doesn't want to haul his skis and poles over here. He will bring his boots only. Does anyone in the Nagano/Hakuba area have some spare skis they can lend, give, rent or sell me? I guess he needs something in the 170cm range and some poles. Ideally, skis that don't need to be waxed or edged would be best. He only skies on groomers, so any regular skis would be fine. Please let me know if you have some spare skis knocking around and can let me borro
