yodel 0
How's it get there then? I was in Nagano a week or so back and the fields were all dry and then yesterday some of them (not all) with tons of water in them? How does it work, anyone any insight?

Ocean11 0
There are networks of ditches connecting the fields, with little gates that are opened to let in the water.
veronica 2
Where is the water coming from?

Ocean11 0
Well, it comes down from the sky, then into rivers, and from the rivers it flows into the irrigation ditches. A quick look at a rice field next time you see one should tell you pretty much the whole story. Farmer sometimes put small fish in the rice fields too, but the ducks and frogs climb in by themselves. Enderzero has kindly supplied the chemical knowledge behind the phenomenon of water.
damian 0
Not always just water. Several hundred large numbers of years ago, the Chinese used nearly all available human excreta as a fertilizer in their rice paddies. This of course had certain side effects, particularly on those that waded waist deep in the slurry day in day out. Where is the Labour Union when they are needed.
slimeypete 0
Ocean11 has posted exactly double the number of posts that db has. Isn't that interesting? Some kind of anniversay style "do" is called for I think.
enderzero 0
Yet db has been on the forum 1/3rd of the time Ocean has. At this rate.... ...oh I forgot, db doesn't use the forum much anymore.
