viv&kev 0
So, who will get the womens marathon? One of the 3 Japanese ladies, that UK lady or someone else unexpected. Looking forward to watching that one.
ug 0
According to the Japanese, it seems a Japanese winning is a done deal. According to the Brits, it seems Radcliffe winning is a done deal. Perhaps a dead heat?
nzlegend 1
Marathon??? who cares? the real action in in the blue ribbon event the 100m sprint. Greene, Powell, Gatlin, Crawford and Obikwelu are all SMOKING! in the heats, all of them were just cruising and posting sub 10 secs. The World record may well fall tonight you mark my words. Cant wait for this one!
slow 0
What happened!! All radio stations have a live marathon program tonight. Who want to listen to it for a few hours on the radio? I'm going to sleep. Oyasumi...
Fattwins 0
radcliffe bombed out because of the heat and noguchi won in a very slow time.
nzlegend 1
9.85 not a world record for the guys, but a good time. Yep Radcliffe bombed I really feel for her, most dominant female runner of her generation but no glory at the Olympics, bombed last time bombed this time too. Fattwins it was a slow time but remember it was a very tough course (in sweltering heat) with a long uphill section in the middle, it wasnt the usual flat course they make. Considering all the factors I think it was a pretty sharp time.
indosnm 0
But thats what the olympics are all about. Uspest. Often the world champions DON'T win the gold. Pressure maybe? or the financial reward that everyone want for winning gold?
Fattwins 0
Im not saying it wasnt a tough course maybe too tough? Marathons are not uphill climbing battles that is cross country. I dont care who wins just you would like to see a fast time at the olympics.
scouser 4
Very slow, but esp in conditions like that the marathons not about the time but positions. I was secretly dreading a 1,2,3 for Japan - the hysteria of that would have been deafening for months to come...
Fattwins 0
BBC says it is impossible for Northern European people to win in those types of conditions. The Problem with the Olympic marathon is that marathons themselves are run usally in the spring and fall.
xxx 2
She just caved in when she knew she couldn't win it maybe......
Fattwins 0
possible but 18 runners dropped out due to heat stroke. They ran the race mid day for TV instead of the morning. They will run the mens race the same way watch for drop outs.
NoFakie 45
One (British) report I read said it was switched from morning to afternoon for the US TV schedule. Radcliffe looked a goner for five km before she stopped. Her head was all over the place. It's pretty tight to suggest that she just gave up coz she couldn't win. The upshot of all this is that Japan has a new heroine and we should see less of Naoko "can't be bothered with the Worlds or the qualifiers but I like doing adverts" Takahashi. Thank Christ for that! FWIW, I don't suppose the next one in Beijing is going to be much cooler.
Fattwins 0
Hey wiggles thanks for the mail was at a wedding will email soon. Yeah Takahashi was stupid in the way she planned but will have to change to get those sponsers back. I expect to see her at the worlds. I personally dont think this Japanese girl has it in her to run fast times, but we will see.
happyhappy 0
I heard that about the time reason as well - to accommodate the tv schedules.
indosnm 0
they started at 6pm Athens time. Sure it's not as cool as the morning but it definately wasn't run mid day as some have said. That would just be plain mad!
dale#1 1
Even so wasn't it something like 36 degrees at the beginning, concrete temps over 40.
Fattwins 0
I thought 4 olcock local?
stripper on coke 0
Everyone has known for more than 4 years the marathon was going to be run in warm weather. Don't tell me some runners were expecting a tepid 16 degrees or something (at least in Greece it's not too humid - nothng like what Beijings going to be like). It's called prearation and aclimatisation. Just because you are the world champion, you still have to prepare, just like evryone else. It seems (judging from the event itself) some were better prepared than others. Perhaps with the marathon we could do something.......... Let's take the judo thing one step further and give every competitor an equal medal.............this way we don't even need to run the race, we can schedule it for whatever time suits......... HoTRoD 2
We do not need sad sounding excuses, as you say. Boooo.
giggsy 0
I admire marathon athletes, I just can't imagine running for such a long distance. They must be mad.
base40 0
That Radcliffe entered the 10000 as well and flunked that last night - a bit predictable (the flunking)
big-will 7
Hey that bloke who attacked the bronze medal guy in the marathon - was he the same bloke who ran out on the F1 race last year? Sure looked like him.
Ocean11 0
That was the guy! It said on the news that he's going to be garrotted at IOC headquarters, and that Juan Antonio Samaranch is coming out of retirement to oversee the ceremony. They also said on the news first that he was Airandojin, then that he was Igirisujin. This kind of misreporting throws some doubt on the method of his punishment. Maybe in fact he's going to be broken on the five wheels of the IOC rather than Samaranch's favoured Spanish method.
Fattwins 0
isnt he the pride of the irish? The guy had a few to drink and then went onto the course. Just glad the guy he took out didnt go down and get put out.
