So who are they?

When i used to ski, Glen Plake was where it was at.

Nowadays, snowboarding is getting a little out of hand, but Scotty Whittelake is punk rock. Rumor has it that he rote his contract out with Gnu in crayon, and only asked for enough boards for him and his friends. He donated all the royalties to different charities...

then he just quit professional riding `cause he waasn`t having as much fun. He`s a bike courier now, i think.

Travis Parker is also pretty rad. One foot fastplants down cliffs are crazy. plus he keeps it fun.

Oh, and the gnarliest thing i`ve ever seen done on a board was by this little-known pro called Dennis Bannock. He just straight-lined a rather steep mogul field in lake Louise, and basically blew me away with how burly he rode. He`s been a bit of an influence on me.

And if i had to date a skier, it would definately be Aiko. she kicks ass too.

So who do you look up to?

My girlfriend.

After being a typical Japanese-recreational-daytrip-to-Gala-Yuzawa beginner snowboarder in 2005, she now hikes and rides most of the back country stuff that I do. After blowing her knee up in the 2005 season at Naeba she made a huge comeback in 2006 from almost zero confidence and now rides slowly but confidently. Performance is not important anyway. She is out there with me planning tours, carrying her gear on her back, assessing terrain, reaching the summit and then riding back down. That doesn't make her unique in the universe of snowboarder girls. But since I first started boarding, after all the 'I wanna get into back country riding' hot air and zero action from people I met along the way, she is the only person I know personally today that hikes and rides back country terrain and knows how to use the gear required. From her first time wearing snowshoes and packing her board in Chamonix last Christmas to our isolated June spring tours taking 4+ hours of hiking and another 2 hours to descend, including a long dry hike back into the valley, she has been into it. The progress in confidence, fitness, awareness and riding over those 6 months was fantastic.

I don't really use the word 'hero'. I respect and admire her.

I dont have any conventional heroes like all that, to be completely honest with helmet and googles and viewed from a wide angle most pros look all the same to me! except Jeremey Jones - for he is doing the insanest lines.

I respect guys who show me some nice unknown lines or people of higher ability who let me ride along with them. respectli4.gif

Thats what I am all about, those are the people who help and influence me far more than any pro rider.

Oh and Warren Miller who back in the mid 90's lit my snow fuse with his great cinematography

Sweet Spud. Thats exactly what Id like to do with Ewok and am hoping to start taking her out some as well. Id love for her to ride with us where ever we are on the mtn.

not heroes persay but Ive always enjoyed watching Micah Black, Candide Thovex, Sage, Tanner Hall, Seth Morrison plus others - and though I dont board I love watching Jeremy Jones too - hes does some sick lines.

He was in a couple of really early freestyle vids with people like Jeff Brushie and Craig Kelly that I saw not long after starting riding (they were OLD vids then) and his sections were so RAW punk - the sickest balls out freestyle at speed, and one of the best methods - IN HARD BOOTS!!! Can you imagine how wrong/hard/impossible that is??
He just seemed like such a baddass.
That was pretty inspiring, especially in these days of more calculated approaches to being a 'pro snowboarder'.

props to Candide Thovex too - seen him ski in the flesh a couple of times and he rips. Plus he pushed fs skiing in Europe on his own, and seems so much cooler than the "Yo Braaaaah" N.American fs ski machines.

CB – Some Jeremy Jones stuff is awesome and other stuff is hard to differentiate from controlled falling in an upright posture down a very steep fluted powder slope with a board on his feet. I don’t mean to disrespect his obvious skill, in fact I wish he would choose me as a friend and we could hang out and do it together. My point is that I think a lot of movie makers/sponsors stick guys like him on a visually impressive line to move product. Often it results in pretty superficial satisfaction from a useful big mountain riding perspective. I watch to learn, not to get a 30 second hard on. Check out the footage of him on Standard Films ‘Paradox’. They went all the way to Russia for that? Thanks f’nuthing. As a aspiring beginner big mountain rider, I want my money back. I think sponsors/directors make these guys perform like circus animals at the expense of real snowboarding art.

As for getting your Ewok out there, I really strongly encourage it man. BC touring with my girl has been the highlight of my 34 years of life to date. I admit that to get it going I had to sponsor her entire gear supply, av training and stuff ($$$!) and also inject quite a bit of drill sergeant style motivation. It won’t just happen with casual suggestions. I literally bought her a shovel and snowshoes etc for Christmas then dragged her out and showed her how to use it. You have to take the initiative and set a firm lead example but make it fun. If she doesn’t respond…. find one that does ;\)

Jesus, who made you today's smart arse. Bloody pom ;\) .

Visually impressive rather than technically impressive. That's because the vast majority of viewers want an immediate visual thrill rather than a working example of the worlds best (and luckiest) creating their art on the mountain.

That is why 91 Words For Snow is a great movie. It has too much kicker and rail action for me, but none the less, it offers the viewer a little bit of each featured rider's heart and soul and skill, rather than a money shot plastic tit porn flick sensation.

Its a good movie and my ears tune in every time I hear the names of the thinking fellas that made it.

its those bloody intelligent Germans. I think it's probably my favorite film too. But it's a film about snowboarding, rather than a snowboard flick.

I agree about some of JJ lines in dvds - i don't think it's even visually attractive when he does the steep as fck sideslip 'falling standing up' sections. The (probably less steep) bits when he lets the clutch out and hammers down actually making turns are good though.

As for technically impressive - either the viewers have to know as much as the riders about it, or there is going to have to be a lot of explanation going on... maybe the problem is having big mountain sections in freestyle dvds - why isn't there a big mtn only dvd each year? The problem of expense of filming could be solved by more chat and arty shots of hiking for you!! ha ha.

lol.gif If I tried that with soubriquette, I'd be wearing them up every available orifice. It's a shame because she was a champion sprinter in her yoof. She was put off skiing by all the cross country stuff she was made to do at school. She hates walking uphill too, so I can't get her into the mountains in summer either. Bummer. She knows how to use a shovel though.

\:D nobis, the straight line monster.

i'll just throw a few more names out there though skiing or snowboarding simply doesn't make you a hero. a god, perhaps.

the crazy canucks

scott schmidt

phillipe laroche and nicolas fontaine

jean-luc brassard (though i've since developed a dislike for him)

mike doug

hugo harrison (possibly my favorite)

and other's already mentionned and some that escape me at the moment.

i love watching footage from big mountain freeskiing comps. you get to see the mistakes and the glory and everything in between. lots of stellar skiers attacking the same face in a bunch of different ways. cool stuff.
