snobee 0
Seem's like this topic gets flashed every season, but Arai is just a mother of a snow magnet. 120cm overnight up top. Location, Location, Location.
SydFunnelWeb 0
120cms is nice it does say its wet and heavy though at all parts of the mountain
Fattwins 0
wet and heavy base is perfect. That will settle better and compact less
scouser 4
Thats a lot of snow.
sanjo 2
Pity it isn't open!
Fattwins 0
A bit early to justify opening. It would be a total money loss right now.
sanjo 2
Yeah realise that, wasn't complaining just thinking - what a waste!!

Fattwins 0
yeah but Arai is rocky and it needs 2 meters before it can open. sanjo is it snowing your way?
sanjo 2
Nah we don't usually get much snow where I am!

sanjo 2
Well, I'm in Sanjo which is fairly close to Niigata city - much closer to Niigata than it is to Yuzawa and the likes, example Yuzawa is a 90 minute drive from here.

Matt and I thought it would be incredible up top but there was only 2 runs open and they were short short short. Arai is so bushy I was saying originally that dry or wet snow anywhere is good snow
Fattwins 0
Toque I was replying to sanjo.
IwateKen 0
When I went to Arai I was surprised at not so much snow at town level, but so much on mountain. Like in other not so far area like Yuzawa there is much more snow at town level I think.
Fattwins 0
systems get loaded up over the japanese sea then as the clouds rise up over the mountains the presure change makes it dump.
IwateKen 0
Does that explain why the village just at the bottom of the mountain does not get so much?
Fattwins 0
pretty much where the mountains are rising is where it is dumping. The mountain is in the prefect position. Flats drawing the clouds down low then rising fast over the mountians equals big but often wettish dumps.
mattlucas 0
Yuzawa is also a little more inland where as Arai is right on the coast
big-will 7
Seems like Yuzawa ain't getting that much yet compared to the other areas this time round. We're spoilt though, it's only Dec 6th!
frannyo 2
I'm hoping to hear from someone whos been to Arai already. Thinking about going up next weekend if they open up a bit more. (Surely?!)

snobee 0
421cm Opening week - mid December. And that's at the Gondola. What's it up top?
big-will 7
I'd like to know is this is a record or not? Blair?
Kumapix 0
I went once 2 years ago, got caught on the 2nd run ducking a rope and then had a really boring day. I didn't find the runs exciting at all - very wide & featureless. The snow was also crap so even ducking ropes was a waste of time
