@tokyo 14
The Kusatsu thread inspired this. Whats the smelliest onsen town you've been to, scale of 1-10. I was surprised that Nozawa wasn't so smelly.
JA2340 16
Have been to Beppu and Nozawa. Walking around Nozawa, there is a bit of sulphur in the air (in some parts) the air around the "hells" of beppu is quite thick with sulphur, though. the town itself is quite free of pong, though! nzlegend 1
Rotorua - the place reeks of sulphur.
Ezorisu 0
Pago Pago, American Samoa - all the tuna packers and factory fishing ships along the North end of the harbor at Atu'u reek of rotten, dead tuna!
RobBright 35
Does owaku-dani count?
muikabochi 208
Kusatsu was quite smelly. Though not overpowering and I liked the place a lot.
Hotaka Scott 0
Not a town but a tunnel - midway between Oyashirazu and Hakuba on route 148.
pie-eater 207
Most tunnels are smelly. Any reason for that one in particular?
Hotaka Scott 0
Has a very strong sulpher odor mixed with the usual car exhaust. Burns the nose a bit.
frannyo 2
I can confirm. It is smelly. There's one fairly near me as well that for some reason really stinks. Enter with your window open and you regret it.
onsen tamago 0
The smellier the better if you ask me! I just love the old fashioned onsen towns. Kusatsu, Zao, Nozawa, Ikaho, Beppu.
ssar 0
Trail, British Columbia, Canada is the smelliest town/city I have ever been to - it's right near Red Mountain etc. and has some big pumping industrial plant on the river near there that seemed to have been doing a good job at messing the place up for many years Sydney, New South Wales, Australia comes in second - mainly in certain areas in the city itself. That's not how those areas should be
scouser 4
Runcorn/Widnes in the north west of England is a real smell-fest.
JA2340 16
And, before they, very sensibly, got rid of BHP, Newcastle was right up there! I know, I spent 5 years working in the thick of it and the smell was pervasive (and it was everywhere, too!)
BagOfCrisps 24
Isn't it the people though, scouser, not just the town?
