MortonSlumber 0
My Japanese friends are planning a trip up to Hakkai in Muika-machi (?) in Niigata. They have said it's pretty difficult place, so I'm not sure whether to go or not. Anyone been?
Wizz 11
Long long mogul run. If you like the moguls, you'll like Hakkai.
tsondaboy 0
Also this area produces my favorite sake. If you go there try it, it is called “hakkai-san”.
muikabochi 208
You talkin' bout my town there? (Muikamachi) Hakkai-san sake is good. They have a brewery as well making a decent beer - incredibly called "Hakkai-san". Same company. Not mad on the resort myself a bit too bumpy for me, but a great mountain to look at and climb in summer too.
tsondaboy 0
Sooooooo many times drunk with "hakkai-san". I definetly wanna visit the brewery!
muikabochi 208
Friendly people tho they dont have a tour that I know of. They have an expensive restaurant at the brewery. About the resort forgot to say it is very "not busy" this season.
IceEiji 0
Hakkaisan is well known for mogul run. And also sake of course.
SKI 15
Only go to Hakkai if you are feeling real genki and got lots of energy and your knees are feeling good. (Like the beer!)
mina2 6
Just like to add to this. It is true that this place has a long long run that is prone to moguls and lots of mogul-bashers head for the place, but boarders can enjoy it too - I've had a few decent days there (usually when the moguls weren't there). Not exclusively a skiers resort at all.
yamayamayama 2
Question - does the sake company run the resort too?
muikabochi 208
No, Hakkai san skijo is part of the Evil Empire. Oops, sorry, the Prince group.
scouser 4
The resort doesn't sound like a place I'd be too keen on. The brewery sounds good though. How far from Yuzawa is all this?
joshnii 2
It's about 20 minutes from Muikamachi IC (turn left onto Route 17), so from Yuzawa it'll be about 45 minutes I'd guess.
girl with a beard 0
Is it true it was made basically like a mogul run for the top guy of the company - he comes in via heli then does his moguls, then back to Tokyo? A story a Japanese friend told me...
klingon 10
Off to Hakkai this weekend with a group of crazy ski friends. Not sure if it's my bag, but I'll be sure to write down my impressions.
muikabochi 208
How was it klingon? It sure was a bit too bumpy (as always) when I was there this last week with a local group. Free ticket, can't say no - you know how it is! Great snow though.
M 0
How are the crowds (or lack of them) there this season at weekends? I kinda like it a few times a year
muikabochi 208
Weekdays not busy at all, empty. Gets fairly crowded at weekends though, all those mogul bashers gathering. (Nothing compared to 5-10 years ago though apparently)
M 0
Yes it is quite popular with a certain group. I went once on a Saturday and it was no fun at all, it's not the widest of places anyway that main run down so tons of beginners trying to get down (in vain) was a real pain. Weekdays on a good snow day and it was excellent. muikabochi you up there in Muikamach right, any good connections up there for any freebies
muikabochi 208
Yes thank you "A Specialists Mountain", as a proud employee told me once.
big-will 7
I've never been there, it always seems to far out of the main area. But I heard the snow was really good. (True?)
joshnii 2
Hey muikabochi did that place used to be skiers only? (Is it still?)
muikabochi 208
It was crap today, though it did start snowing again which was a good thing.
joshnii 2
Crap coz of the snow?
