BagOfCrisps 24
While I was posting my silly post on the other thread, it got me thinking.... when I go to Switzerland, say Zermatt, those pretty little villages often have very expensive posh brand shops going on. I certainly haven't seen anything like that in my limited Japan experience, but do any of the resorts have that real posh thing going on? Perhaps they might do in coming years... (?) (PS Not that I'm interested in the shops myself)

charlotte 0
Never seen any. More run-down shacks in general than over-priced brand shops!
joshnii 2
Yes, there are a fair few run down shacks. Arai had some shops and had an expensive look, but it was still just the resort and they weren't brand shops or anything like that. I can't think of anywhere with that kind of village feel. Retired Morris Dancer 0
I heard Karuizawa was about the shopping as much as the skiing. Do they have the expensive shops?
skidaisuki 0
Karuizawa? They have 'Niketown'...
Markie 0
Yes, definitely some up-market shops at Karuizawa. I even remember there was one selling very nice fur coats. The prices there were quite good though. Lots of high quality stuff there at prices which were relatively cheaper than what you would normally pay. Not crazy discounts but reasonably good ones. I definitely remember Karuizawa more for its shopping and eating than for its slopes.
griller 9
So that have a MacDs as well then? People don't go there just for the skiing though do they? From what I saw of it they would be silly to. I think it has a really early start though which gets people going (right?)
2pints-mate 0
I'm no way into posh shops, but they would look rather better than some of the run down and rather messy towns on offer in Japanland. We have commented on that each time we visit, shame really.
XilR8 0
Karuizawa opens on 1st November with artificial snow, but the hill is about the same height as I am...

Hokkaidough 4
I think you'll see some of that kind of thing in Niseko within a few years.
cheeseman 1
I have said it before, but resorts should be catering more for all those Cheesefans out there. That would bring the "punters" in.
big-will 7
Why don't you set one up yourself cheeseman?
Yui in Tokyo 0
I am not interested in shop when I go ski resort. But I think that old and closed place is not good for image of resort area. Some look very old now I think.
BagOfCrisps 24
Well thanks for the answers folks. Looks like I'll have to buy my posh bags before I go...
