Under-rated/overlooked albums/movies/books

Recommended Posts

OK so it all depends on your point of view, but a magazine I read is doing a series of features on albums/movies/books that that called underrated. It's really interesting to read and has come up with some good new stuff for me to listen to/watch that I might not have known about otherwise.

Heres some albums I think are generally underrated, but I really like.

REM - Up

The Beloved - X

Blur - Think Tank

Human League - Secrets

i dont know if i'd call the pixies overlooked. they are selling out every comeback show across europe and north america in hours. every music snob/music magazine creams over them. they are hardly going un-noticed.

William Shatner has done some under-rated songs.

Just kidding.

I think the most recent REM album is really good, it got a lot of stick,

Oingo Boingo..now there's a blast from the past. Are they still a group? I liked Dead Man's Party and Weird Science when I was in high school.

And Pixies people, I still fire up Wave of Mutilation on my car stereo every now and then.

The Pixies are a "seminal" band surely. I saw em twice in the late 80s. :p Try the version of River Euphrates off the b-side of one of the singles, maybe Monkey Gone to Heaven. It's a lot more powerful than the version on Surfer Rosa that sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. After Big Black, Steve Albini was flavour of the month back then, but he didn't do a very good job on that record. It's a shame because they're great songs.

Whenever I see a list of 100 Greatest Single/Albums whatever, I usually conclude that the entire history of non-white music is under-rated. It's always under-represented.

The lead singer has done well for himself - he's the bloke who does all the musical orchestrations for The Simpsons!

They are my rock gods.

The closest i could get to explaining their music, is it being the aural version of Dada. Strange, abstract lyrics that are sometimes sung well, sometimes screamed in spanish, and always perfect to the mood of the songs. Their most accessible album is 'Dolittle', although my favorite is Surfer Rosa.

Truthfully, it took some time for it to sink in. It wasn't the case that i immediately fell in love with them. It took a few listenings, but i fell in love with them. And this is from a guy who always thought having a 'favorite' band was silly. But these guys are.

If you want to download just a song or two, maybe try the UK Surf Version of 'Wave of Mutilation', or my the sexiest song in the world, 'Hey'.

Isn't there a pretty trippy Surfer Rosa VHS out there? I vaguely remember something from a long time ago. If I'm wrong it was Jane's Addiction...??

On Jane's Addiction's last tour (before becoming porno for pyros) Perry Farrell got naked on a stage at aloha tower and got arrested.

...I like 'em too!

Come to think of it, I think Perry is the originator of Lallapalloza.

I remember seeing Janes Addiction in Sydney back in 1991. Absolutely awesome, it was just before they split for the first time. It was the Ritual De Lo Habitual tour!! Man there was some tension between those guys on stage, the space couldn't have been big enough, they all stood as far away from each other as they could but they f#$kin rocked!!

Perry was the Lollapolloza originator but I think he split from it for a while but recently came back to revive it!!

One of my favourite bands!!

I saw Porno in '93 at an outdoor beach concert and it was completely nuts. The mosh pit was way out of control. The band had chickens running around on stage, there were bare breasted women, some guys puting swords down their throats, guys spitting fire and at one point Perry started making out with a male clown who had just imitated slitting his own throat and was (fake) bleeding all over the place.

After the concert Perry and some of his group grabbed some boards and just went surfing at the beach across the street.

There is a big contrast between concerts, maybe the band is more comfortable at home. I saw Porno and it was a beautiful scene, the sun was just going down and their backdrop was awesome like a good trip!!

So for hijacking the thread just stirred up a few great memories! \:D

Talk Talk the album that followed "The Colour of Spring", "Spirit of Eden" - both of them brilliant. They got dropped by the record company after it coz it was so uncommercial.
